Harrison didn’t see herself as particularly funny when she was growing up in small-town Ohio. She was the youngest of seven children born to her father, a mechanic from Detroit who died when she was six, and her mother, a Vietnamese immigrant who worked as a translator. Harrison accidentally stumbled into improv while studying at Ohio University and fell in love with it. She never graduated.

It looks like Harrison is on the cusp of serious screen stardom, but she’s got an ambivalent relationship with the idea. “I’ve always felt like being an actor is so cringey. Doing all those embarrassing interviews where you have to say, ‘It’s all been a magical experience’,” she says, putting on a girlish lisp. “Who gives a shit? But I have to accept that this is something I want to do.”
Hopefully that won’t mean that Harrison ends up toning herself down. She’s already had a lot of pushback against her humour. “I really don’t want to become bitter and calloused in my response,” she says. “I try to listen when the criticism is thoughtful. But sometimes people have that kind of social media brain rot, where they’re terminally online, where their whole point of view is based on idealism, not lived experience. That’s frustrating.
Harrison rails against the difficulty of having words from your show taken out of context, and the sanitised world of TV comedy, but ultimately strikes a note of hope. “I think the pendulum is swinging back to allow people to be grotesque, to be shocking,” she says. And that can only be good news for a comedian who loves nothing more than making a dumb, messed-up joke that’ll get her audience shivering with delight.
