A woman who can smell Parkinson's disease helps scientists discover what causes the musky odour.

Media playback is unsupported on your deviceA Scottish woman who astonished doctors with her ability to detect Parkinson's disease through smell has helped scientists find what causes the odour.

She has also been made an honorary lecturer at the university because of her efforts to help identify the telltale smell.Prof Perdita Barran designed experiments with a mass spectrometer to mimic what Joy does with her nose They are contained in sebum - the oily secretion that coats everybody's skin, but which is often produced in greater quantity by people with Parkinson's, making them more likely to develop a skin complaint called seborrheic dermatitis.

Currently there is no cure and no definitive test for the disease, with clinicians diagnosing patients by observing symptoms.

Per hippuric acid as a signal of Parkinson’s Disease, interesting in context of other research (soil science) suggesting hippuric acid affects nitrogen metabolism (e.g. nitrous oxide)

Has there been any research into other illnesses such as cancers? My father recently died from cancer and my mum said she knew his smell changed about 15 years prior to his diagnosis in early 2016.

Actually I can do a fart that mimics perfectly that 'musky odour'.

Well, it wasn’t going to be explained by religion.
