An estimated 1 million pupils have signed up for free school meals in the UK for the first time during the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced many families to cope with a significant drop in their income. Around 1.4 million children were already enrolled on the scheme.

Why call it a 'scheme'?
Why feed them when the state will. Surely it should be parents signing up not kids. Just hope that the legitimate families benefit and not those just taking advantage
So far just working through social media posts demanding local eateries serve up food on demand, which sounds expensive for someone.

Ha! Parents who choose to send their children with a packed lunch are told to STILL APPLY FOR FREE MEALS SO THAT THE EXTRA MONEY CAN GO TO THE SCHOOL IN THE FORM OF STATIONARY!! Schools lunches in the 70s & 80s weren't only healthy & substantial' more importantly THEY WERE LOVED.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that looks pretty basic . Frozen peas and sweet corn , a cheap bread roll and some sort of processed fishcake thing alongside . The cake looks cheap . Can’t believe this cost £2.35

Is ‘signed up’ accurate ? More ‘became eligible for FSM due to change in circumstance’ You can’t just choose to get free dinners because you fancy not paying !!

why do kids need free food? don;t they have parents?
We are not eligible for free school meals we are self employed but since April we have really struggled due to loss of income and have been doing our food shop on our credit card but just imagine the people who don't have that to fall back on and have lost their jobs.

If they can't afford to feed their kids they are unlikely to have a phone with Twitter.
Just think how many school dinners could have paid for had the Covid consultants not been paid £7000 per day. As ever it is the greedy swine at the trough who are getting fat on the gravy train.
In Estonia, the free meal for students has been implement already for years. It is very popular measure to tackle the inequality between families.

I'm a parent to an adult and teenager, never qualified for free school meals, and I'm a 40% tax payer... if people are poor, they are poor and children shouldn't know what it's like to need or worry about food, school timetable be damned!
