Ten years' vaccine work achieved in about 10 months. Yet no corners cut in designing, testing and manufacturing.
"The world should have done better," Prof Sarah Gilbert, the architect of the Oxford vaccine, told me. Conventional vaccines - including the whole of the childhood immunisation programme - use a killed or weakened form of the original infection, or inject fragments of it into the body. But these are slow to develop.Scientists took a common cold virus that infected chimpanzees and engineered it to become the building block of a vaccine against almost anything.
"We'd been planning for disease X, we'd been waiting for disease X, and I thought this could be it," Prof Gilbert said.At this point, the team did not know how important their work would become. It started out as a test of how fast they could go and as a demonstration of the ChAdOx1 technology. "If this had been a completely unknown virus, then we'd have been in a very different position," Prof Pollard added.
They had some funding from the university, but they had a crucial advantage over other groups around the world."We could say stop everything else and make this vaccine," said Prof Pollard."Getting money was my main activity until April, just trying to persuade people to fund it now," said Prof Gilbert.
"If we had not been thinking about how to shorten the time, we might have had a vaccine in March but not started trials until June."
President Trump pushed them to.
maybe they had it on the shelf and needed to create a market for it, and they pretend to be rushing it when reality is quite different. I mean 3000 dollars per dose is quite a incentive to lie.
Covid 19 was identified in 2019. Biological tests include taking a swab from the nasal cavity to collect cells which are tested in a lab, a vaccine is being developed in weeks. How many biological tests does psychiatry have for 295 mental illnesses?
Making a vaccine for something that isn't real shouldn't take too long
dash of this, bit of that, mix it up and hope like hell it works!.. lol
Skill❤️ Intelligence❤️experience ❤️dedication ❤️money Thank God for all the scientists who have been working day and night to get this vaccine
night Because there’s trillions of dollars to be made based on the criminally fraudulent casedemic which has already earned companies billions of dollars. When is the going to do its job and expose the fraud or even the various conflicts of interest?
if one offers 90% and the other offers 94%, can I have one and then the other to 'fill in' the gaps that the respective ones have ?
Oxford and Cambridge have been creating a vaccine for many months it needs further testing. Vaccines are not being created for political gain unlike trump who has shares in Pfizer and is pushing vaccine for emergency use without trial fully completed!
Yeh that's a question that needs to be asked. Unless of course they already had it.
Well I’m not having it anyway
How did they develop any of the Covid vaccines so quickly ... almost as if this whole thing was planned 🤔
Great Britain going to save the world once again with their humble and proud attitude God save the queen
night China said here it is if you want it but it'll cost ya.
They haven’t,they’ve been quietly working on it since day one, no fuss, no publicity, no giant ego. Just hard scientific work and proper evaluation. Stop sh1t stirring BBC and just report facts...your do job, no fuss, no ego, no political bias.
The sooner we can get it the better it will be for everyone. All back to work and all businesses open, the UK making money.
Pfizer & Moderna's vaccine didn't test asymptomatic people, requires a -70C fridge & cold chain, & costs 10x the Oxford vaccine. The Oxford/AZ vaccine is 90% effective with the right dosing regimen, can be kept in a basic fridge & is cheap as chips.
Science will always be in front of funds!
Maybe could get their Medical Editor to be one of the first to take the vaccine? It is about time the BBC did their public duty.
by applying for a patent back in 2017. Still believe this was not planned psyops
I don't trust this at all.
Why have they been unable to make a flu jab that’s so effective after 80+ years? How have they achieved this when swine flu was rushed and failed miserably? Is the swine flu fail why there’s zero liability this time so they won’t have to loose profits paying for injuries?
Check the date on this... MARCH
I will wait for 50 % of the population to take the vaccine. Then we will have herd immunity 🙃
They used LemSip. Simples!
To all the numpties spewing out conspiracy theory crap, why not actually read the article. It's an excellent distillation of the processes taken to design, test and manufacture the vaccine. It's an extraordinary achievement.
Vaccine deveolpment has been a great achievement - but it may come just too late to prevent disaster. The populist move to relax restrictions over Christmas is projected to produce an enormous surge in the second wave in January. This can be avoided if Johnson stops this madness.
Because it's Bill Gates death jab which has been around for a while killed every animal tested.Banksy
Great read & fantastic to see what’s been done so quickly .
According to my SIL's friends dead baby fetuses from the 70's
Wasn’t it Mack in June that we would struggle to test a vaccine due to the low rate of infection. But low and behold the second wave gave them the numbers
Those that orchestrate the disaster always have the solution. This was probably being prepared before they executed event 201 I mean plandemic 1
It's been a while in development, but great news.
Infinite health:Down, X, Right, Left, Right, R1, Right, Down, Up, Triangle
It’s a Christmas miracle
Great piece - great story. Well done. Sad the number of idiots who post rubbish as a result....hey ho
Because they want to make a bundle of cash before “the virus” disappears. Essentially a rerun of Swine Flu on a larger scale.
From Sky news 😡😡
I thought the Russians had this sorted 6 months ago?
OMG...BBC planting doubts yet again!! You didn't ask that question to Pfizer . Pfizer is claiming it's 90-95 % effective have you investigated it?
If approved by the Regulators and not 'fail' during the roll out process. This is why it is a mistake to apply to vulnerable groups (care homes) first, instead of a group of fit young people in gyms, swimming pools, etc. This is not stopping transmission, just boosting immunity.
It existed prior to the release of the man-made China virus, the kung-flu, to be trumpeted when the people's will to resist mandatory vaccination had been broken?
Pfizer AstraZeneca et les autres pendant plus de 40 ans n'ont pas réussi à créer un vaccin contre le HIV du SIDA qui est aussi un virus comment peuvent ils créer un contre COVID19 en moins de 8 mois ?
I'd like to see British ppl become the first lab rat.
Fill a little glass jar with water boom
Why no cure for cancer? Research too lucrative?
When pharmaceuticals around the world are loosing so much money due to covid, a vaccine was going to be produced at an excessive rate. When they are back in the money, it'll take five years testing for other vaccines and treatment to even see the light of day.
They probably unsuccessfully hacked Pfizer-Biontech
Why sow doubt BBC, did you question the USA vaccine, they were even faster - Why wouldn’t you support this?, god knows Britain needs something to be proud of right now. Support the scientist who have barely seen the light of day for the last 10 months in order to help us.
Which journalists are going to solve the mystery? Since Brexit journalists have foresaken their investigative role for opinion when what people crave is facts AND truth. Media and politicians too cosy and most politicians consort with anyone who will facilitate next steps.
By cutting corners..
Yes, how did they? 🤔
It helps that practically every scientist in the world that is trained in the field has been working on this non stop for nearly a year. Amazing what can happen when humanity works towards a single goal
Now what everyone has to ask themselves is DO YOU TRUST A WORD THE BBC SAYS? ANSWER! NOT ONE CHANCE IN HELL!!
Just mixed in a few limesip and paracetamol and Walla sniffles sorted
Maybe someone from Pfizer must have given tips
developed in China last year
Funding and support
They hacked Russian scientists
Not fast enough obviously. This vaccine is different hence why it's quicker to develop. Read the article
Probably helps that the virus they are making a vaccine for is man made!!
Negativity running riot
Only 70%...I thought the others were in the 90s... no point to it if that's so.
COVID 19 politics will soon come to everlasting end.
And after 3 years.. When people start dying from this vaccine then they will say 'oh shit but we had no idea, we thought it was safe'
How? The MSM called it effective before it was certified, that's how.
If so much is now known as to have been able to develop multiple vaccines to prevent China Virus, why have GP's apparently yet to have a medicine they can prescribe? Could this be anything to do with it, or what really is going on: Listen in full!
yes, astonishing isn't it
Don’t know, I won’t be finding out
Cos it's the best country in the world and we dont mess about cant wait to have it injected and if people protest I'd say kick them out country
Brainy 🧠
The more relevant question is why does this process normally take 10 years.
Got a bottle of Hydroxychloroquine and put a new label on it?
wow
We can have a best Easter 2021 in our lives.
By making it not as good as the other ones 😆
