A system for opt-out organ donation in Northern Ireland - known as Dáithí's Law - will be delayed from taking effect due to the Stormont stalemate

BBC News NI political correspondent

At the time the original bill was approved, then-Health Minister Robin Swann said it would be known as Dáithí's Law after six-year-old Dáithí MacGabhann, who is waiting on a heart transplant. It states that legislation has been "prepared and is ready to be introduced" in the assembly, but the ongoing political deadlock means that cannot happen yet.

The Department of Health said contingency plans have been activated that would allow its implementation planning to "remain in a state of readiness pending the restoration of the assembly".

Utter disgrace!! Shame on all of you duponline

How many missed opportunities to change peoples lives will be missed by this bill not being put into action.Let the DUP and the 1 seat wonder hang their heads in shame & explain to those patients affected how their NIP stance is more important than their chance for a better life.

Westminster should push this through...madness not too....it is the right thing to do.

paulgivan on the radio this morning. Your resignation delayed that mate!!!!!!!!!! Nothing else

Open the Stormont doors on 1 Feb. Anyone not turning up for work gets 7 days’ notice. Let those who want to work, work. Let those who don’t want to work lose all pay and position.

A worthy cause, but government has no right to pass laws like this. Period. I will be opting out on principle as soon as I can.

Let's see, all the parties want to get back to work, bar one and the one seat wonder. So now, in addition to the untold damage they are doing to the NHS they are now stopping children from having life saving transplants. True sons of Ulster! Don't know how they sleep at night.

Damn protocol literally killing people 😡

Noone can opt In or out at the moment because we have no functioning Executive. Wonder who's to blame for that? 🤷‍♀️🤔😥

Anyone opting out should be ineligible to receive a future organ donation themselves.
