Staff are beginning to regain the trust of pupils who are now confident that their concerns will be listened to and addressed. Inspectors found that school leaders "are rapidly unravelling the toxic culture of intolerance to difference that was identified at the last inspection".
In conclusion the report stated: "Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School remains inadequate and requires special measures. Leaders have made progress to improve the school, but more work is necessary for the category of concern to be removed. I strongly recommend that the school does not seek to appoint early career teachers."The school's headteacher Alan Porteous remains on long-term sick leave while his position is being undertaken by acting headteacher James Johnstone.
"School improvement does not happen overnight, but I am encouraged by the progress made to date. These improvements would not have been possible without your support, and the commitment of our dedicated staff, governors and, of course, our wonderful pupils.
Just six years ago, the selective, mixed grammar school was judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The establishment traces its roots back to 1703, and has been based at its current site for just over a century, describing itself as having ‘traditional values’ and a ‘strong family ethos,’ as well as ‘a safe, secure environment where students can flourish and excel.’
