Oldest garden centres and nurseries you can visit on Merseyside

Every year, thousands upon thousands of us on Merseyside make plans to transform our outdoor space, spruce up the garden or add a few plants to a balcony.

This list isn't intended to be comprehensive, we've included several long-standing garden centres and nurseries from across Merseyside. Whitakers Garden Centre When it opened in 1923, Whitakers, on Liverpool Road in Prescot, was considered a landmark garden centre. Set in 22 acres of countryside, Whitakers sold home and garden products and served breakfast and lunch in its café on this site for almost a century.

Running as a garden centre in one form or another since then, Aigburth Hall Nurseries began before the term "garden centre" was created. Today, the garden centre has expanded to sell everything from bedding and houseplants to trees, bulbs, seeds, gifts, cards, pots and containers and more. As well as hosting regular events, with entertainment, Rosie's Restaurant on-site also puts on afternoon tea on special occasions such as Mother's and Father's Day. In the garden centre itself, customers can buy a collection of plants, garden furniture, garden accessories, garden buildings, and garden tools and there's also regularly a team of horticulturists, and gardening enthusiasts on hand to offer advice.

Sandy Lane Nurseries It's been over 50 years since Mervyn Davies turned his hobby into a business and transformed a field into a thriving nursery. Located on Sandy Lane in Melling, Sandy Lane Nurseries started from humble beginnings in the 1970s when owner Mervyn decided to have a career change and buy land to build a business he loves.
