February is LGBTQ+ history month, and with it comes a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come

– and how far we have yet to go. It’s 28 years since RuPaul made history as the first drag queen to land a major beauty campaign for MAC Viva Glam, the lipstick that has since raised more than £400 million for the MAC Aids Fund.

“We have the UK government blocking an important bill which would make it easier for trans people to change their legal gender. This shows that we still need to fight. The campaigners, trailblazers in this article have made massive contributions to the cause, often at great personal sacrifice. Listen to trans and queer folk when they speak up for their rights. And get behind them.”

“I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious. He’ll be [playing] the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor,” he revealed. He also confronted his MP for criticising LGBTQ+ inclusive education by inviting him out. “The LGBT community in Birmingham is just that – loving, joyous and normal. I’d love you to see that. So I’m inviting you out for a night in the gay village, preferably on a night when my mate Ginny Lemon is performing; she does an astonishing tribute to Cilla Black,” he said.

Dakota Schiffer Last year, she became the first trans woman to compete on RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. Her appearance on the show gave Dakota – real name Astrid Basson – the chance to share the story of the bullying she and her non-binary twin went through growing up.“Those experiences from childhood are such a dark time, I’ve got such bad memories about them. But they are not too dark because I knew that every day, leaving school, my best friend would be walking home with me.
