The energy regulator says the new code of conduct for installing prepayment meters will make sure suppliers "are acting in a fair and responsible way with involuntary installations used only as a last resort". The measures were first announced in April this year and came into force on Thursday .
It also said it was acting to ensure more people will be protected this winter. Prepayment meters can be installed when a customer is in debt and are pay-as-you-go, meaning power is cut off if payment is not made. As well as this, energy suppliers must make at least 10 attempts to contact a customer before putting in an application to install a meter. Suppliers must also prove to courts hearing the warrant applications that they can keep to the code of conduct set by Ofgem.
Ofgem said it will "not hesitate" to take action on energy suppliers who break the new rules. In a statement released at the time, Neil Kenward, director for strategy at Ofgem, said: “Protecting the most vulnerable consumers is at the heart of what we do and this decision not only cements the protections Ofgem put in place for people deemed most at risk, it goes further to protect the most vulnerable households.
