Ofcom set to be given power to police social media in UK

Regulator Ofcom is set to be given the power to make tech firms responsible for protecting people from harmful content such as violence, terrorism, cyber-bullying and child abuse, the government will confirm on Wednesday. They will also be expected to"minimise the risks" of it appearing at all.

This is the government's first response to the Online Harms consultation it carried out in the UK in 2019, which received 2,500 replies. "When I first suffered abuse the response of the tech companies was below [what I'd hoped]," she said.

Hopefully that will mean nasty individuals, targeting child sex abuse survivors to re-abuse them on this platform for kicks, will be dealt with swiftly!! barstandards

Some of the maniac hypocrite types would seek to use any corruption of the law as weapons to harass/abuse others so take care not to allow that.

But lets not allow the leftist maniacs close free speech on other matters with their fake ist & bigot claims which we all know is their aim. The maniacs and their cohorts are installed in many institutions and so the public should pay attention to what government is doing.

The Online Harms Act they are talking about indicates it is there to protect children, deal with terrorists and criminal use, and serious bullying. Sounds sensible.

katsandcrows This is the biggest bullshit

SomersetBean Blackout

katsandcrows The only way I see this working is if Ofcom was completely unbiased, but that’d be hoping for too much. Everyone has agendas they wanna shove down your throat.

'protecting people from harmful content'. You can smuggle a lot of horseshit into the law using the word 'harm'. This is worse than ill conceived.

utter rubbish, WM can’t even get these companies to pay their tax , so just how are they going to stop this ?

End of Trump Twitter. Account then or does it not apply to him, No need for it, FB & Co already do screenings and good at deleting stuff, don’t need big brother interfering. Why not just chip all citizens or Chinese style monitoring, get it over with.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 so glad to live in America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Vote authoritarian parties, get authoritarian policies. If anyone is genuinely surprised by this then I have some magic beans to sell you.

Loool. Should have done this before the GE and the tory 'fact check'!!!

Will OFCOM police Tories spending millions £s on Facebook fake news to rig the general election? How about ex tory ministers spending millions £s on fake news to avoid election spending laws? Facebook TheGreatHack ToryLies MediaBias

Instead of censoring the public on the web, how about we educate the public on the web

About time.

Cant wait for the social credit system China has to be enforced next...

Nanny state

The UK will become like China then

How can someones desicion to kill themselves be blamed on social media? That's like saying video games make violent kids... All I'm seeing is how can the Internet be manipulated and who can do it?

Stupid idea.

I wonder if they will be given powers over false advertising and false political statements/campaigning on social media too. Unlikely I would imagine.

First the facial recognition cameras in London and now this....

The end of free speech as we know it or used to! All this crying about 'I'm offended' you have just self sensored 'Police' there you have it expect a knock on the door from them a ban and fine if someone doesn't like what you say!Jobs f**ked!Government have just doubled down!

The Great British Dictatorship

and who watches the watchdog? lol

And police the wrong opinions next?

Does this mean my days of horrendously offensive memes are over?

BBC is a subversive communist propaganda channel. Don’t fund them.

This definitely won't be used to censor people talking against demographic replacement and the current anti-white establishment.

Said it before. Google passport should be a thing. You need to log into that before you are allowed to do anything online and your real name and all activity thereafter are logged because of that sign in. Sign up checks done by Driving Licence and Birth Certificate.

More evidence of the lack of freedom in England! Democracy my arse!

Police or Censor?

Oh you mean like all the other 'watchdogs' toothless and curled up cosely with the those they are supposed to be watching...

Good. Social media nowadays also broadcast hate an ignorance that would be otherwise limited to the lonely room of some individuals. They must be stopped.

An online police version of the Tory-infiltrated BBC?

Oh great

WeAreFairCop

Does Ofcom has the resources for this?

I thought the police were the police of social media. Two sets of public servants to do the job of one. No surprise there.

Basically to 'protect' us. But that is double speak for 'taking our rights away'. The choice of slavery and safety or freedom and the risk of danger

Considering the bbc own Ofcom this is very bad news.

Given who's running this country at the minute I'd expect the caveats ...unless it's a lie we want people to believe....

Trying to put the Genie back in the bottle!

Social media is global. Most hatred is global. What rights do they have over a global group? Just wondering.

Corruption at the highest level

About time too. Twitter has just become a place of total disrespect and a platform for the most vile comments. There's a big difference btwn freedom of speech & just being a venomous troll. Difference of opinion & debate is wonderful. Being disrespectful & cruel is not.

Good. Social media is out of control these days. Freedom of speech is paramount, but because of utter cowards that hide behind their keyboards churning out hatred and abuse it also needs regulating. Cyber bullying is a huge issue these days, kids especially need protecting

it will work as well as the uk did with banning adult sites

They're already incredibly 'safe'. Why bother.

here we go snowflake britain there is an off button you know

This is not good news.

If used properly and in a sensible way, then Social Media is good and safe to use.

Good News. *Tips Fedora*

You mean help to hide Corruption on behalf of the government... Dont you..,

I'm sure they'll make about as much use of that as they do against the BBC and others. None at all.

Really? I though Rachel Riley had that job?

as long as they dont remove freedom of speech its good just ban all the fake accounts

Wonder if it will act against Russian trolls undermining our democracy? Or BBC journalists discussing postal votes before polling day? Or microtargeted political ads containing falsehoods? Stable door, horse, bolted, etc.

Lol. The same ofcom that doesn’t know it’s ass from its elbow?

Well if it's anything like it's regulation of commercial radio it'll be pretty toothless.

Conservative “free speach” twitter in tatters

Probably explains why I got suspended for joking about wanting to kill a Baby Peanut...

Still trying to shut down free speech! The BBC hates the idea of losing control of the what news we are allowed to hear. There brainwashing agenda has now become very apparent to a large percentage of our population.

Police State! We need more de regulation and a free speech platform not more of this god damn nonsense!

Good !

lol

Good luck with that one, do they even have the resources to have much effect? It'll mostly just involve fining companies etc.

I hope they like cats and puns.

Invading peoples privacy. Undoubtedly, they will be on the look out for 'hate speech' or to most millenials... Literally any speech which they disagree with. Worrying times.

You can already have police at your door for saying things online that aren’t crimes in the uk. “Non crime hate incidents”. This isn’t even as disgusting as that and it’s still disgusting.

What? It should fall on my local student union to police our speech, surely?!?

There is absolutely nothing private about social media so stop complaining about your PrIVaCy

Very important.

I’ve got to be nice to the idiots now (

Those social media companies already censor anything they don't politically agree with. Now our privacy and freedom of speech will be attacked further.

Ooh jeez. Worried if something similar will happen in the States if it hasn't already.

Sounds about Chinese

Yes this is gud There is very much violence and terrorism on the Twitter

Soooo like China?

Oceania is always at war with Eastasia.

I thought this wasnt going to happen until Huawei & 5G took over the networks. Will it take the Stasi form of citizens informing or will teachers encourage their pupils to inform on wrong thinking parents?

Because this will never be abused. Truly unending despair.

The use of the word Police feels a bit provocative here. It’s about time social media companies and content were better regulated.

Isn’t Ofcom a regulator.. why use the word ‘police’. I doubt they have the resources to affect the faux outraged.

They'll be as useless with social media as they are with everything else. The execs at the corporations are cracking open the champaign. The fines will be miniscule, the equivalent of a parking ticket for you and me.

Big brother is watching...

They should also do it 4 Instagram YouNow YouTube youtubemusic YTCreators YouTubeTV Vines as well as for Facebook tiktok_us UkTiktok tiktok_uk tiktok_de Twitter WhatsApp wa_status Myspace musicallywow & musically_PH on all social Media accounts and platforms...

Ridiculous Political Theatre!

This will make as much difference in the real world as the law change making middle lane cruising on the motorway an offence, in other words - absolutely none. Laws without policing = utterly pointless.

wtf?! the police have more pressing matters to attend too...

There goes our free speech. All conversations will have to be politically correct or we will be silenced. All the 'hate speech' believers will be actively trying to suspend accounts. Utterly terrifying. It's 1984 in 2020

Fascism / Censorship I've seen this Movie.... Welcome to the Police State 🚨 QAnon WWG1WGA

So the police can tweet for us in the future. Not on my watch

Unacceptable! Rise up against our government speak out!!!

😒

SocialMedia is censorious enough as it is, and OfCom are compromised 🙄

Absolutely not

Sounds good to me. People should not be able to use social media in ways that brings harm to others.

Uk Social Media users all change their names to Julian Assange to avoid Ofcom policing,,

It will all but guarantee slanted and one-sided policing.

I think it's a positive move, but with all due respect, why on earth would an American based TNC take on board any sanction or warning by Ofcom? Ofcom have no authority in the eyes of these huge corporations like it or not, unfortunately.

I knew there was a reason why I used to download the UK Versions. 😁

That's it...….am banned !

1984 here we go, thanks to the leftie pricks.

That's terrifying.

Police = censor

Orwell laughs
