The energy supplier has issued a message to direct debit customers about their monthly bills

Octopus Energy has sent a message to its direct debit customers regarding their monthly bills. As the weather begins to warm up, many households may have ceased using their heating in an attempt to save money.

The reason lies in how the direct debit payment system operates. Energy suppliers charge a fixed amount each month to prevent bills from fluctuating drastically throughout the year, reports Birmingham Live. Customers have the right to do this at any time. However, they should always think carefully before claiming all of their credit as it could result in higher payments during winter.

In response to queries about why some consumers might have a credit balance, Octopus Energy explained: "Most people use more energy in winter and less in summer, but pay the same amount each month via direct debit. That means you build up credit during the summer to help towards your higher winter bills."
