Tom Welsh: Number plates are the wrong way to curb insufferable cyclists

No, I don’t support requiring cyclists to have number plates. Too much of life is governed by permits, regulations, and not-so-voluntary guidelines, and all it seems to do is empower petty officials while creating mantraps for unsuspecting innocents to fall into when they manage to transgress some rule.

Not to forget compulsory insurance plus fines for riding on the pavement without consideration for pedestrians.

Number plates don't stop drivers driving dangerously. 'In 2017, there were 1,793 people killed on the roads in Britain, the highest annual total since 2011'.

Cyclist should have public liability to pay for any damaged caused

We’re here and we’re not going away. Despite your sarcasm, bullying and murderous intent.

Build bike infrastructure (paths/roads) - get them off the main roads as a minimum

Cycists don't like the idea of number plates because there's a much higher chance of them being fined for jumping red lights, riding on the pavement, dangerous cycling etc... They enjoy their anonymity a bit too much...

Some cyclists do expose themselves and others to avoidable danger. It’s become a mainstream mode of transport that should somehow be made safer for all. Number plates will help; and forcing drivers to stay off cycle lanes will help more. (I’m a cyclist).

It would be 1 way to hold them accountable for their actions.

Absolutely right, number plates are yet to cure insufferable car drivers, Lorry drivers or motorcyclists.

Of course, the introduction of number plates has removed the amount of drivers who speed, use phones, drink drive, cause crashes. Maybe more police is the answer?

They have no shame. They regard themselves as morally superior.

Chains & a packet of tacks .. that's the way

Unfortunately, the right ways to deal with them will all land you in jail.

Robert Winston calls for cycle number plates after street assaultLabour peer claims he was kicked and abused by a cyclist who was riding on pavement It's the flashing lights that annoy most people. Cars aren't allowed to have flashing headlights or rear lights. And we are on the road. Why is it one rule for us and another for others. Well it's not stopped motorists from killing people ? Can we get pedestrians number plates too ? The number of people happily walking down bike paths round here is amazing. I swear they love the little bike paintings. Drawn to them... Adults should not be cycling on footpaths and even on the road, they need to have some type of proficiency test and third party liability insurance.
