Our society was once packed with people whose inability to attend university stifled their potential. Now, the reverse is true: the latest figures show that 50.2 per cent of 17- to 20-year-olds in England have had higher education. Sadly, many have studied courses of little intellectual value at institutions undeserving of public subsidy. Many who can obtain a degree only by studying a substandard course are wasting their own and the state’s money by spending three years at university.

So it's only education for the rich that's allowed
'Many who can obtain a degree only by studying a substandard course are wasting their own and the state’s candy by spending three years at university'
If they scrap joke degrees, then how will the telegraph recruit 'journalists'
The number of degrees awarded by universities in 2018 was eight(8) times those awarded in the 1960s when 50% of students did not benefit from uni. Unbelievable that they are eight(8) times cleverer than the '60s.
Please give example of substandard degrees
Amen!
And be of no benefit too patients
Supported letter manager n hrs Cook don't you want too go too university and follow in the footsteps of ward round now university has changed 2002 because of nhs selling 2001
That’s fine if professions that never used to demand a degree, go back to a more open selection criteria. Nursing, police, paramedics all now require a degree to join in most circumstances and as a result miss out on superb people they always would have recruited in the past.
The university route has always had odd courses but with the expense that gets many people into huge debt they can never climb out, of its time the courses were aimed purely at the employment market where graduates can access employment and decent salaries as they progress.
What they mean is 'don't let the little poor people study'...
And do what instead Their is zero capacity for apprenticeships unless the state pay to expand them. So either way they pay
Are you implying a PhD in middle age basket weaving will not guarantee work .
Admitting 50% of school-leavers to university was another useless, needless policy from Blair that led to a generation of cognitive dissonant 'graduates' with degrees in hair dressing or drumming. Universities should be there to sort the intellectual chaff from the wheat.
The kind of dullards getting ‘A degree’ is evidence that the higher education system is screwed.
And the next thing all those substandard PHDs are your brain surgeons—83% of students claim learning disability before they even enter university— non of them write their own exams or papers—be wary of the fake PHD claimant!
How does going to University cost the state anything?
Jenifer46277051 Apparently, you can get a 'rap' degree at some instition calling itself a University🙄
It seems you're just trying to push the anti-intellectualism agenda. At the end of the day, if people want a university education, let them.
This is not news 😂😂😂
This Isn’t a new revelation . Too many pointless degrees .
It’s not just degrees. This year especially there seems to be lots of students who have done mediocre degrees now doing Masters degrees. How useful are these? Will it make it easier for them to get a job?
'states money' - interesting, normally you call it tax payers money but when it comes to scummy non Oxbridge courses, it's 'states money'. DT doesnt like the 'wrong sort' going to university. Their parents have paid taxes, theyre entitled to a tertiary education, aswell.
Been saying this for the last 15 years.
So true.
This comes from the common misunderstanding of what a degree is for. The purpose of a degree is not to increase earning potential, it's to pass down the culture and create good citizens. It's so the farmer can take into account the lawyer's needs when he votes, and vice versa.
There are some pointless degrees out there. Degrees put on by universities realistically should link to real job prospects at the end of it but many don’t.
Many employers now insist on degrees for jobs that don't really need a degree, as a lazy and inaccurate filter for 'more able' applicants. For as long as that remains, many young people will feel they have to get a degree in order to tick those boxes.
Make Christian teachings a module of the course and at least they will come out better citizens, because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
