Northern rail passengers warned of ‘winter of chaos’ as firms slammed for blaming delays on staff sickness
“Any commuter using rail services in the North of England know that this is a long-term problem and that cannot be blamed on staff sicknesses,” Ms Brabin told“But if rail operators genuinely believe staff sickness is their excuse for these delays, then my real worry is that as we head into winter, passengers will be left stranded out in the cold as they will surely fail to tackle this chaos. And that is no way to run a railway. The Government must do better and act now.
The poor performance of train operators has become a frequent theme coming out of the pandemic, with many struggling to cope with a reduced number of staff, a training backlog and sickness absence, as well asBut for fed-up travellers, the result is having to cancel plans, change work schedules or spend hours waiting for trains that don’t arrive.
“In normal circumstances, we have enough people to fully operate our scheduled timetable, however the combination of all these factors has put unprecedented pressure on our ability to operate a consistent service. There have been a number of infrastructure issues on the network, including a broken rail near Huyton, Merseyside. Network Rail is working hard to repair it and some services may be cancelled or delayed.
