A rail operator in Greater Manchester has fired a warning to anyone who considers travelling on its trains without paying a fare. Northern is cracking down on persistent fare evaders across its rail network.
And if the passenger is a persistent fare dodger, Northern says they should expect to be prosecuted for historic cases of fare evasion, as well as the journey for which they were caught. Mark Powles, commercial and customer director at Northern, said: “Fare evasion hasn’t been as simple as people just not buying a ticket for quite some time.

With 70 per cent of tickets for Northern services now bought via online platforms, the company says its Digital Fraud Investigations Team can scrutinise the circumstances of suspected fare evasion incidents 'in much more detail'.
