The Guardian published a series of articles featuring allegations against Clarke in 2021, with the actor immediately being suspended by Bafta and losing the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award he had received days earlier.
Clarke has seemingly filed a defamation claim against the newspaper, as well as claiming for general damages over harm to his reputation, and special damages covering specific financial loss. Should he win the case, a judge will determine what he is entitled to, however Clarke is claiming £10m.He said the impact of the allegations and articles ‘financially has been devastating.’ and ‘every existing or upcoming contract’ he had been due to take part in had been cancelled since the first article was published in April 2021.
In regards to the £10m claim, the documents claim he would have received over £1million for acting in, writing and directing in the fourth series of Sky TV’s Bulletproof, including an estimated figure for royalties. He also claims he would have received £470,000 for his appearance and royalties in ITV’s Viewpoint series 2, £60,000 for producing the Channel 5 show Highwater which had been greenlit and which he says would likely have begun shooting months after the articles came out, and £60,000 for BBC’s Crongton, which had also been greenlit and which he says would have been shot in 2022.
