'No risk' at Wetherspoons says the company, as 66 staff test positive for coronavirus

Forty of its pubs have reported one worker testing positive for the coronavirus and six have disclosed two.Wetherspoons said 28 of the affected employees had returned to work. A spokesman for the company said the workers, as well as those who worked in close proximity to them, self-isolated for 14 days and were paid in full.Mr Martin said there was no list of the pubs that had been affected.

"It is much easier to inadvertently pass on the virus in someone's house, where people are more relaxed and less vigilant," he said. From Monday, social gatherings of more than six people have been banned both indoors and outdoors in England and Scotland and indoors only in Wales. It follows a rise in new coronavirus cases, with a further 3,330 positive cases recorded in the UK on Sunday.

Mr Martin said:"If pubs are closed, or restricted so much that they become unprofitable, a great deal of the strenuous effort of the hospitality industry's 3.2 million employees, currently engaged on upholding hygiene and social distancing standards, will be lost."

One of the main sources of Covid in Altrincham. Just pass by and see the utter covid carnage of teenagers not following any social distancing. gmpolice

How do you make a complaint regarding something that happened in a wetherspoons pub the blackwaterstreambroadstone uk dorset abusivestaff

TheGunnersPub No risk I'll be visiting a Weatherspoons.

they employ 43000 people, so that’s 0.001% 👍🏼😆 even then, are any these 60 ppl actually sick, any i. hospital? or did the test just pick up residual covid RNA from a past infection?

66 of 41000+ is an exceptionally low rate. Test and trace enforced and countless measures for distancing. Tell us how many supermarket staff got it during lockdown it’ll be far more I’m sure! Pubs are safe.

No risk I’ll set foot in one, ever again

👀🤔🤷‍♂️😷

Fake. Double 33.

Wetherspoons = lower socio-economic strata of society, groups most at risk...

Have a pint with free Covid on us. Enjoy

more chance of winning the lottery than getting covid

‘ No risk of carpeted floors not stinking of pish and vomit’ says Wetherspoons spokesperson.

you do seem to have a problem with reporting the 'news', it isn't just repeating what Liars say, it is actually more nuanced than that, you should know this already but you are given orders by the government, so can't really blame you, serves you right, 'mistakes' come back

What comes around goes around, especially at Wetherspoons.

ShitChester No risk for me cos i'll never set foot in one again after his bollox in furlough

If you can survive their food you can survive Covid

Oh wow, 66 in 41000.

Tim Martin & his whole set up is an absolute disgrace..!!!!!

NeverSpoons

Owned by a moronic half-wit as well. You left that out.

It’s not about a “virus” it’s about control and compliance,we are in living very dangerous times,if we do not react our lives and those of our children /grand children will be changed for ever, time to wake up Its one big scam.

66 out of 40k employees!! ‘Boy done good’ 🍻🍻

I think we need to translate Wetherspoons No matter how good an action is, at Wetherspoons it's wrong if it affects our profits! Now Tim wouldn't it be easier to say that?

Logan7Titan

Have huge respect for Hugh Pennington. If he says it's dangerous then I trust him in that he knows what he is talking about

Eating and Drinking their shite is a risk in itself .

And Tim Martin decides to put more lives at risk by refusing to name the pubs affected. So thats the public and his own staff Tim dosent care about. Yet loons still call him PATRIOT Covid_19 Wetherspoons BoycottWetherspoons

Along with Sports Direct I do not frequent these properties as they are owned by selfish men who only see the bottom line in their personal income.

Are any of them ill?

666 🤣

Blah blah blah no one is bothered about your scaremongering anymore. DefundTheBBC

Weren't we going to close the pubs so we can keep our schools open?

Die for my profits is what he’s actually saying the man’s evil

Looking for sick people instead of treating the really ill.

Most people will test positive, it's a genetic material. Especially when the test is blowing up the sample beyond all recognition

LOL Who said that, the fat, ugly Brexiter who owns the chain?

Testing positive for a virus in a test not testing for the virus.

Total lie

I don’t even walk past my local Wetherspoons on the same side of the road. Customers with no masks stood outside drinking and smoking with no social distancing. Not safe to be on the same pavement.

It's no risk to me as I won't be going there again after the dispicable way they treated staff during lockdown.

Tested positive on largely unreliable tests and all are likely suffering no symptoms (if they even have covid)

Only in England do your see a thread like this, where some, strange people, are so moved to verbally despise entrepreneurs who've so vastly succeeded, where others fail, in the effort to create many, many jobs. Talk about biting the hand that feeds. Beggars belief, doesn't it? 🙄

What a pity they didn't work for the biased Brussels broadcasting corporation, then that would be great to shut this lot down.🇬🇧🇬🇧🖐🖐🖐

I haven’t been in a Wetherspoons for years because the place was filthy so I have never returned

Went to Liverpools Spoons and some scrote was in it selling stolen aftershave, the staff turned a blind eye.. Fookin grip

Tim Martin is gammons gammon.

Too many people in wetherspoons full stop, go to a quieter pub. It's the equivalent of McDonald's plus alcohol.

The pub culture of the British isles hasn't been good in a pandemic. Has it? Same with the countries with the rampant cafe culture. They feel so entitled to it, they'll risk their lives. I don't get it. Buy a case of beer and play games with your mates on discord instead.

66? Hmmm. Basically 66 people have a sniffle

2 classes of people are not the rich and the poor, but the wise and the foolish.

😂😂😂😂😂Tim Werzel Gummidge strikes again More bullshit

Ridiculous. They are very carefully controlled.

awuorenm

My daughter works in their kitchen. She is the only one wearing a mask. She is Bullied by other staff and a couple managers for try to social distance to the point they walk up into her space and try to get her going by coughing and making fun of her.mangr does nothing.

Don’t forget, there is no legal requirement for the staff to wear masks, in some pubs they will tell you this is why they’re not wearing masks, science and stuff like that, nah.

There is risk everywhere what nonsense

No risk of me being there either! Ever!

..

And that's not all you'll catch 🤦🏼‍♀️

Again testing for a virus that's never been Purifiered isolated and shown to even exists as the uk government for proof and they have none to show. Scam-demic

No one should be darkening the door of this scum organisation. Support independent businesses and businesses that have looked after their staff in difficult these times.

66. Whole lot of 6's everywhere you look

DARWINISM

Now it's a war on a prominent brexiteer.

I was in my local Wetherspoon last night and I'm Ok. So to say that pubs are dangerous is BS.

How many of these cases are actually detrimental to other peoples health thou ? .. we have to be sure these tests are even real

Lol Martin should be locked in an lunatic asylum.

Oh, well, if the company says so 😂

Why are you quoting him then

They love the number 6

Shut them all down..

Just proves that Tim Martin talks shite

Coronavirus of COVID19? Can you stop with this fear mongering

Bet he doesn’t say which pubs have staff infected. Good luck to patrons, it’s a lottery now.

The 'company' (T Martin) is lying and thinks its customers are gullible morons. Partially correct at least.

We have simple rules to follow, yet it seems hard to everyone. Please people, wake up!

I hope Tim wetherspoon gets sued.

How many of them admitted to hospital? How many had respiratory illnesses this time last year? Does the BBC employ any journalists who actually ask serious questions like that?

so if there is n o risk why have 66 members of staff tested positive if there is no risk then no one would have tested positive

To mis-quote Mrs Merton: 'So BBC, what was it about Brexit supporting Tim Martin that first attracted you to this story?' 😉

Why aren’t you also reporting on the number of schools with COVID cases, these are in the hundreds.

Wetherspoons SocialDistancing COVID19 no sign of social distancing/in out routes being followed catherinewheel henleyonthames last Friday never seen so many people in one place - didn’t stay!

This is like some shit from 'The Day Today'.

Considering recent (or any) TimMartin statements, anyone stupid or ignorant enough to continue using wetherspoons since would also clearly be stupid or ignorant enough to ignore rules/distancing/masks/washing/humanity in general.

Just wondering why Wetherspoons are being singled out here? How does their % of covid positive staff compare with say the BBC for example

🤦🏻‍♂️

Everything is 66

I don't believe there a risk either, because it has been proved these tests are fradulent. However the way our group were tweeted in two Wetherspoons yesterday will mean I'm not in a hurry to go back. Esp setting arbitrary limits on numbers when half the tables outside are free.

Staff are at risk not customers.

VeeCee30 The Moon in the Square, Bournemouth.. Members of staff tested positive last week, pub stayed open and people queuing to get in over the weekend. Who’s at fault?

Is there evidence that they were infected whilst at work? I thought not.

Hold up... People are still going to weatherspoons after everything they... You know what im not surprised..

66 infections out of 41,000 staff.....

bbcnews Stop lying

BBC shouldn't really be going down the Facebook route of publishing known lies.

Read that back to yourself, really slowly.

Who to believe: the prof or the guy who wants people in his pubs?

No risk my arse

If I'm going to catch covid 19 you can be damn sure in won't be in one Tim Martin's shit-hole gammon pits.

Except if you work there, then there's a risk.

Spoons is a plague house, confirmation!

Coronavirus or covid 19. One being the common cold the other being mild flu 🤔

There’s no common sense in their distancing at spoons, just confused minimum lip service! I was ordered to leave for briefly standing up at a table by a manager who got so close, her saliva sprayed my face! gmpolice’s reporting system is a waste of everyone’s time too.

Never believe what someone tells you in a pub.

But how many were hospitalised!? Or died? If it’s asymptomatic why does it matter

Company had literally no concern for its staff! Should be forcibly shut down permanently!

But the government was happy to encourage people to 'eat out to help out' at wetherspoons...

I’m surprised covid can survive in the bottom feeders that drink in Wetherspoons.

Shut them down

Shut up, BBC! You're costing a billionaire lots of money by telling us this!

You sure it was 66 and not 666?

🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡

No mention of anyone actually being ill though. More fake news from the Ministry of Truth.

So Tim Martin thinks it's fine & dandy for his staff to get infected & then pass coronavirus onto his customers then..

Got to say that .66 staff got it 🤔

66

If Wetherspoons was a country, you'd have to self isolate for 14 days after visiting.

They tested positive for Common cold, at best. 'Covid' is a hoax.

Positive tests do not equate to case

I'm not surprised that Wetherspoons has so many cases, some people think it's where coronavirus started and foot and mouth disease.

What is it with you fuckers and the number 6

Dying for a pint.

Good to see you don’t mention it’s 66 out of 41,000 scaremongering BBC

So obvious that the people and media where going to start blaming the likes of schools and pubs based on zero evidence. The virus spreads mostly when people are in close contact with each other for longer periods that mostly happens when people mix together in homes, gardens etc

No risk if you have no brain 🤷🏼‍♀️

Fortunately the owner of the business isn’t brainwashed but the media will work hard to portray them as dangerous. The media make me sick.

66 out of HOW MANY WERE TESTED ! that IS WHAT THE NEWS SHOULD BE REPORTING. If it is 66 out of 3,000 or 66 out of 200, now THAT is a problem Its no good reporting 66 without context

I bet mr Martin stays clear of his pubs

1) They employ over 40,000 people 2) No proof that they caught the virus in those settings.

And?

AsBrexit Don't worry says Tim Martin, all 66 staff members have been sacked to ensure no one else gets it.

redgraeme Sheesh....

I think they meant 'no higher risks than those associated with eating and drinking there'.

No risk of meeting an intelligent person at wetherspoon.

Considering Wetherspoons employ 40,000 people in the UK, these cases represent 0.165% of the workforce. Given the vast majority are cust. facing, surely this is a big positive ?

And truthfully, r any in hospital because of tht ?

I think it's safer to use the app NeverspoonsApp pubs RuleOfSix

That must be the Wetherspoon rule of 6!

Define coronavirus please.

Could you explain where in your article the words 'no risk' were said by Tim Martin, only I can't see it anywhere in there?

Don't worry Tim Martin, there's no risk I would ever set foot inside your gammon-y Wetherspoons.

Maybe you’d be interested to see the complaint I sent to Wetherspoons and their pathetic reply when I raised a lack of Covid standards at one of their locations! Happy to share

With your faulty tests

Time for the gov to lock down ‘witherspoons’ 🤣🤣😇

Plague pits owner by a shithouse Brexity thundercat. Shut them down. Keep them closed.

Any chance you blokes can share how many employees have tested positive? bellends

Very elderly dad toddles off on his pub crawl daily after shielding & lockdown, Covid19 turned him into a raving alcoholic - Weatherspoons with beer gardens are care homes - elderly say where else can you keep warm in Winter, chit chat, drink free Tea all day in UK

Wetherspoons? Wipe your feet on the way out.

Small number when considering how many Wetherspoons employs.

The risk is lower the pub than all supermarket staff - shut all Supermarkets now 🍿 I don't go to pubs so shut them too 🤣🇬🇧

context - there are around 900 Wetherspoons pubs in the UK and 43,000 employees. So 5% of their pubs are affected, and 0.15% of staff. In addition, nowhere in the article does it say where staff contracted the virus.

No risk? Don't make me laugh! One should avoid Wetherspoons like the plague .In addition the chances of bumping into that odious twat TimMartin should be considered .

66 positives, 33 told to isolate in the beer keg fridge and a further 666 waiting to tested.

66, very masonic number, YET MORE BULLSHIT PROPAGANDA, USING CASES,USING FAULTY TESTS, TO FACILITAE ENDLESS LOOP OF MEDICAL TYRANNY, CASES,NOT DEATHS,NOT HOSPITAL ADMITTANCE, PURE ABSOLUTE SCIENCE FICTION BEING FOLLOWED

Won’t step foot in a Wetherspoons and give that odious shit any money. Hopefully it goes under completely. BoycottWetherspoons

Fear mongering from the BBC again. Watch this excellent video for an objective view of what's actually been happening.

Of course pubs are dangerous places!

NeverSpoons

Perhaps he thought sticky carpets would hold the virus?

There's always a risk, 66 out of 41000 is less than 0.2% though, and so long as none die I guess that's an acceptable level of risk, there's probably many other things we do everyday with similar and higher % levels

Let's all move into a pub pronto...

Is it true that the Oxford University Covid-19 vaccine is based on whatever it is that makes Wetherspoons carpets so sticky?

Tim Martin is a disease himself

66 positives, 33 told to isolate and 666 tested.

Omg they tested positive? For a Coronavirus? As we head into Autumn? Remembering that their are SEVEN strains of Coronavirus, one of which is the COMMON COLD!!!! The end is nigh...🤔🙄 TheRuleof666

The chavs who drink at Wetherspoons are the same twats flaunting the rules elsewhere. Bomb Wetherspoons and we can defeat the virus

👀 66

66/41000 “no risk” is bollocks, small risk is accurate

What leads you to make the decision to design this tweet and link in this way? Three times in this tweet you privilege the company's line over the fact of 66 positive cases of staff.

I see stupid people everywhere!

Even with no positive cases, there is a risk due to asymptomatic people. There is a risk based simply on the fact that we're going through a pandemic.

Covid-19 is just one of the many viruses 🦠 infections and diseases customers of they shiteholes could catch.

They should implement a licence system where poor people pay for all their staff to work from home like the BBC.

Do you even journalism any more?

I wouldn't eat or drink in wetherspoons if my life depended on it. Full of gammonhead middle aged drunks putting the world to rights. the staff are treated awfully by the company too

How do you know a Brexc*nt is lying? Their lips move.

People be prepared another total lockdown is coming. The governments of the world have not finished with the public yet.

Where does he say “ no risk” ? BBC obviously have an agenda against Tim Martin. Incredible headline

Lockdown

Yea 66 staff members testing positive and theres no risk in your grotty pubs Tim, i dont think so

Prof Pennington or Tim Martin......who to listen to about coronavirus..? One of life's Genuine dilemmas

Profit over People!

You mean the pubs where people get pissed & lose judgement...like distances might not have been a good idea to open? & a scheme to actively get people into them was not the best idea?

Which coronavirus did they test positive for? Were they actually tested for a coronavirus at all? Or did the amplification on the PCR test simple return a result ‘indicating the presence of material that could be....’ A legitimate news org would ask these questions.

No intention of stepping into a scroat infested crap hole anyway so yeah no risk for me

Tim Martin is a denier. Of the dangers of climate change. Of the impacts of Brexit. Of the harm of Covid-19. And, more generally, of risks to others. Remind you of anyone?

Yep, the human dilemma ? Money and greed over workers health & safety !! Why not, open right up and go for the herd immunity model. One or the other. Some doing it and some not doing it, is not going to get the virus under control !! If your not united it 🐜 gonna work !! 🇳🇿

🤔

THE TESTS ARE FAKE FFS

There clearly is a demonstrable risk

What about mosques? The BBC'S attack on our culture continues 😠

Ok just say for ease of maths that 410000 people are tested in the UK each day to get 3000 cases. Wetherspoons has 41000 staff so multiply their cases by 10 and you get 660 cases.

Must have caught it somewhere else.

Pub staff up and down the country are being forced to take these bogus tests, we can assume that the end goal is to try and prove that socializing carries with it a risk to your health. This is the biggest psyop in human history

Isn’t this the same company that said you couldn’t catch it in their pubs at all back in March?

So what if they tested positive does not mean any of them will have symptoms let alone die, more bullshit lockdown rules when there is no need

Course not. Boris’s mate. Any small pub would be shut

You can't teach stupid...

I drink in several spoons. No one wears a mask custermers or staff. I am 74yrs old and a dead man. Ice Wharfe camden lock.

Shameful!!!! 66 staff who could of been close to people in a pub

As none of his staff ware any protection, it’s not surprising.

Absolutely no risk at all

Tim Martin - putting staff at risk for the great god, profit.

Perhaps pubs can stay open if we all WearAMask! AbbyMilnes highlights that masks are still the best way maintain our freedom during these times. Full story 👇

I have been in several different Wetherspoons since they reopened, and only 2 of them insisted I fill in the Track & Trace forms. The rest of them really weren’t bothered. Very few of them removed the menus etc when one set of diners left, and none cleaned tables properly

Fuck the bbc

Well as long as internationally renowned expert Professor Tim Martin says it's okay

66 out of 44,000 equates to 150 per 100,000 and far exceeds the Government’s prevalence figures for quarantine measures to be introduced following international travel.

probably caught it from the carpets

Pubs are careless. No masks on staff in most .

1 is a risk where you believe its a safe environment. Being in a high risk environment sounds a conservative estimate. Doesn't say contracted 'in' the pub; as could have caught it elsewhere. Taking action sounds a good idea. Reduce the risk; it helps.

Last time I went in a Wetherspoons the floor in the gents was so wet I thought that the tide had com in. Yuk!

he doesn't give a toss about COVID. his concern is profit profit profit. has he paid his tax bill?

People, please remember ‘from the word go’ this organisation was contemptible of customer safety ?

Is Covid-19 a coronavirus or is Covid-19 coronavirus? I thought there were 6 coronaviuses of which Covid-19 is one type.

The worst thing is they’re not listing the pubs,

There's been 3 serious fights in our local wetherspoons since it reopened and now their staff are at risk of dying, just shut the fucking things

RavS82 It's easy to slag off Spoons But 66 out of 41,000 people - would that not be comparable to supermarkets or any business of that size?

And? Isnt that how its supposed to work?

Anyone drinking in spoons after the way they treated their staff

Tim Martin knows better than a professor 🥴

States in article that they collect folks details for track & trace- I asked my son as he’s been in a few since they opened, if he had had to give his details to enter Wetherspoons, he said no. Just walk in, no one asks you for anything. covid

More than likely they just have a cold.

Quite frankly right it's the arsehole taking it in

Your joking my niece resigned and really needed that job due to no safety working in one of those.

66 cases from a workforce of 41,000, shit the bed.

Well they would say that wouldn't they? Wetherspoons the crucible of brexit and covid deniers.

Force them to close!!!!!

Maybe someone can infect Tim Martin so he can demonstrate how safe everything is.

Not a surprise that Wetherspoon's decided to extend Rishi's scheme.

Lot of staff in one pub

Tbh their food is the real hazard

Pubs have been at the heart of the latest increase in C19. Regrettably it has been shown that some cannot be trusted to follow the rules to provide a safe environment for staff and customers. Time to shut them all down until totally compliant. Needs to be enforced by authorities.

Wetherspoons employs around 41,000 people. So that's 0.16% of its workforce. No mention of anyone being ill, let alone being hospitalised or dying from the virus. The pubs re-opened 11 weeks ago, so less than 1 positive test per day on average. I would say that's positive news

JohnWest_JAWS Presumably still No Risk when all 6,000 staff catch it. Get back to work you scum. As Tim Martin flogs another staff member to death.

Presumably they've been sacked and told to get jobs at Tesco instead?

Probably lies. The Gov wants pubs to collapse. Therefore tests probably are positive by agenda.

Would not get me in a pub right now. They are not following the guidelines... so keep them shut...

If there’s no risk at weatherspoons then theres no risk for home parties. It’s one or the other, but not both.

That’s a bit risky saying that 🥴

marksub2 And ?

Could be Boris' new slogans for his meeting in the inner chamber with Demonic Dom. 'profit over health' or 'Wealth Not Health' 'Purses over Nurses' Priti Patel could deport Tim. He's a liability on public health.

the fact so many wetherspoons customers will believe this, is testament to how dumb you need to be, to be a wetherspoons customer.

What are the chances of catching Swivel Eyed Gammon Faced Loon Syndrome?

...but...but...but... ham brained moron Tim Martin said that couldn't happen in pubs!!!!

I’ve never been in a clean Wetherspoons.

66 out of 41000 staff.. 0.16% of staff The story is what? You've chosen Wetherspoons why? We all know why. wetherspoons

The owner is a 🤡

The BBC’s drive to close down pubs continues.

In fairness, the food served in some of South London's wetherspoons should come with a health warning!

66 staff test positive woo...not a good place to hang out then.

And the Test and Trace contacts will not reveal how many others have been infected since it is in xmsuch a dire mess.

Close the pubs

From the man who said you can't catch covid in a pub

Who writes these headlines?

Covid Marshalls, assemble!

The Tory killing shop wants to remain open

Someone should tell them there is never no risk

Why is the government’s “plan” being treated as legitimate? It clearly won’t work & a second lockdown is all but inevitable

abimiamcnab

karlmcnab

Catching covid in a weatherspoons isn’t the worst thing you can catch in these pubs. I would count myself lucky walking out of their with only catching covid!

‘No risk’? Pish! No risk to that prick Tim’s fortune you mean! Staff should walk out on mass!

Father Jack wants your money

If our local pubs are shut down, the blame will be on Wetherspoons. It’s been like a school disco in there. Bar staff have no authority. Every other pub is following the rules to a t, not Wetherspoons though. Free for all.

They are having a laugh

Is he paying sick pay to those staff now in quarantine?

Aye up!
