NHS promises unmet, local government ignored, care homes forgotten. Has any politician got their hand on the tiller? asks Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Something is clearly wrong. Britain does not need Boris Johnson, but it needs a prime minister, and badly. Coronavirus promises are made and not fulfilled. Orders go out and are not delivered. The clothing industry in the UK apparently cannot mass-produce a simple medical gown or mask, and must turn to Turkey, China and volunteers with sewing machines and 3D printers for supplies.

Is Simon still 'taking the hype with a pinch of salt' do we know?

Simon Jenkins. I think the duty of care in the first place was to one and a half million people who had to stay at home. Then to build huge hospitals. Then to pay the wages of 8 million people. You can’t assess a situation and you’re a bit s***. Okay?

Sums up everything about Govt response to virus Country is thinking. Cannot close down debate. Until there is mass testing can we hope to manage to get Lockdown gradually lifted. No one appears to be able to deliver on any of it yet.
