General election 2019: No fireworks moment in Johnson and Corbyn debate

For two politicians who pride themselves on telling it straight, Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn were both on markedly on their best behaviour tonight. There was a wide range of subjects certainly, and profound disagreements - naturally.

For Jeremy Corbyn, the task was to pull the debate back as often as possible to the changes that nearly a decade of a squeeze on public spending has made to the fabric of millions of peoples lives. Even though there were no obvious shocks or surprises, tonight may well have mattered for the many voters who would have been watching who are yet to make their decision. But the pattern of this campaign, however, has been long set.So tonight, for Boris Johnson's team, it was another hurdle they have crossed without a huge stumble.

You do not deserve to be called a journalist. What about the lies that Johnson told - as revealed by your own BBCFactCheck? Corbyn remained dignified and calm despite Johnson's smearing & personal attacks. Shame on you.

“Telling it straight”? ALL POLITICIANS LIE! must try harder to report factually!

It will be interesting to hear corbyn explain why he had documents hacked by Russian that proved that nothing was going on just a wish list and no discussion, but why did cirbyn have Russian influenced documents!!!

And even if there was do you think the BBC would actually allow you to see it? CancelYourToryTVLicence

They are the fireworks - They are both crackers !

A disappointment for the producers then

JC took on the whole tory establishment and beat them

Who won the last debate? BBC chose Britain Elects 33,000 votes Corbyn 57% Johnson 28% Paul Brand ITV 30,000 votes Corbyn 78% Johnson 22% Martin Lewis 23,000 votes Corbyn 47% Johnson 25% The Times 8,000 votes Corbyn 63% Johnson 37% YouGov 1,646 polled Corbyn 48% Johnson 51%

Nick Robinson gave boris j an easy ride in last nights debate. Certainly up to the bbc standard. Yes men to the Tory party NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL

BBC news this morning. They were pretty much neck and neck. Everyone else. Johnson won hands down.

Final proof that the only way is Boris.... Labour are an out of date dead duck.....

..serves you journalists right..no spin on the facts... you'll all soon loose ratings like CNN

Corbyn wants to hit the RICH in Britain to pay more and yet his party (and him) want to stay in the EU. Yet the EU is a club of UNELECTED RICH! backslappers who make are rules. The hypocrisy is unreal. I admire labour voters going against the grain here.

Hey, , you seem to have left this story so far today from your website. I'm sure we will see much more detailed coverage as the day goes on:

Breakfast TV with Charlie Stait completely trivialising leaders debate last night when interviewing Nikki Morgan. When are BBC going get some intelligent presenters?

Corbyn wiped the floor with him

BBC plays down incompetent Prime Minister.

The only thing i find great about Boris Johnson is that he lied to the queen. If this was an earlier time, he would have suffered a breaking at the wheel.

'No fireworks'? The fact that this Tory PM can utter vague pledges about 'building 40 new hospitals + adding staff ' in our critically underfunded NHS, after 10 years of criminal cuts at the hand of the very same Tory Party is a Big Exploding Firework to me. Listen to the lies.

The only thing i find pretty cool about Boris Johnson is that he lied to the queen. If this was an earlier time, he would have suffered a breaking at the wheel.

No fireworks? Why did all the exit polls, apart from YouGov, put Corbyn waaaay ahead?

Neither actually sparkled either! 🥴

This says there was no 'heckling' from the audience. Yet when an audience member asked what should happen to candidates who lie; Johnson went into one about 'them' having to crawl on hands and knees and the heckler said 'go on then'. Why did you miss this out bbclaurak?

' s i x DAYS t o G O ' r e a l l y

good. No-one wants fireworks, we want the government to stop murdering 130k people and counting like the Tories have been doing with their austerity project (which by the way, economists agree doesn't make any kind of financial sense and so is completely ideologically motivated)

Tonight’s debate shows why Johnson won’t do the Andrew Neil interview- He wouldn’t be allowed to repeat the same meaningless slogans all night.

Liar Johnson lived up to his name.

Voting in this election is like deciding which way up you want to be crucified... 🤷‍♂️ GE2019 BBCDebate

Are these pair really really the best of the best of the leaders of the major parties that is on offer!....🙄 Hung Parliament here we come then!?!?....🥺

Waste of time all these debates. They all just lie.

All JIHADI’s should be sentenced to death to other prison term or release them only DEATH.

I beg to differ. It was like one of those shitty boxes of garden fireworks I used to buy; one disappointing dud after another.

Nick Robinson did by far the best job of any of the previous moderators. He resisted the temptation of being a participant as Fiona Bruce was unable to.. Shame though it never got to a real debate. Although the fireworks will happen in the new parliament.

That’s a shame, I was looking forward to hearing Corbyn’s views on the Jews

I will be glad when we finally reach election day as everyone is starting to go round in circles. I suspect most folk have made their mind up. And everyone on twitter who sees any tweets by political parties or politicians will definitely have made their mind up.

Did Johnson answer a question without saying Get Brexit Done?

And not a single mention of the most important question we should be asking. What are they committed to for climate change. Nothing. Not even from the carefully chosen and vetted audience questions. fail

Why would we want fireworks? FFS we actually want kinder, gentler politics - IMO cross party working together is the ideal.

jeremycorbyn came across as the clearheaded, calm winner. BorisJohnson the bluffing, scripted buffoon he is. How many times did he bleat the phrase ‘get Brexit done’ FFS.

You would say that wouldn't you? Knowing Corbyn clearly smashed the shit out of Boris

Fireworks? Corbyn is like that guy that just brings down any party....

Johnson and Corbyn set for head-to-head debateIt comes as Boris Johnson is accused of avoiding scrutiny after ducking out of TV interviews. BoJo famously refuses to answer even simple questions like 'how many children do you have'. For all Corbyn's flaws as an 'opposition' 'political' 'leader', he is fundamentally fit for high office. BoJo is not. Boris lost and brexit will in It is depressing that whenever I see any of the main party leaders I feel like a condemned man whose only choice left is the manner of his execution.

BBC debate: Corbyn hits out at Johnson's ‘racist remarks’Labour and Conservative party leaders clash over racism and NHS in final before polling day Corbyn is an anglophobe and has befriended nearly all anti western groups Those are not racist remarks. Please. I think all the Viking DNA has been washed out of the British people and they have become a nation of wimps! Corbyn accusing boris of racist remarks after proof he had allowed and covered racism in the labour party is just bloody hilarious

BBC leaders' debate: Corbyn accuses Johnson of making 'racist remarks' – videoJeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson clashed on racism during the final televised debate between the two rivals before the 12 December general election. Corbyn hit back at Johnson for having used ‘racist remarks’ after the prime minister accused the Labour leader of a ‘failure of leadership’ Corbyn understands that racism is wrong despite the huge problem of antisemitism in Labour. Johnson doesn't give a poop and thinks anyone who is brown or 'foreign looking' is a legitimate target. Why are you putting it as 'racist remarks'- you don't put Corbyn's racism in inverted commas . Boris is racist. Stop helping him get away with it That wasn’t really a lashing.

‘Totally underwhelmed’: readers on the BBC prime ministerial debateYou have been reacting in the comments to the BBC prime ministerial debate between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn I really feel sorry for you if your response to what Labour is offering is a shrug and a feeling of being 'underwhelmed'. i'm illiterate, what does underwhelm mean tbh The choice for the British people is a bit like which STI would you prefer? Syphilis or gonorrhoea.
