Health Minister says hospital department 'no longer fit for purpose'

No funding has been found for a new A&E at Altnagelvin despite the existing emergency department being "no longer fit for purpose", the Health Minister has said.

Mr Swann said: "The Western Trust is committed to the prioritisation of a new Emergency Department for Altnagelvin. This is a key priority for the Trust and for the region as the Emergency Department at Altnagelvin is no longer fit for purpose. "In attempts to reduce the footfall on the Altnagelvin site in the short term, a Minor Injury Unit has been created to provide an alternative pathway away from the main Emergency Department," he said.
