The Japanese car maker has told the BBC its Sunderland plant is secure for the long term.

Nissan's car plant in Sunderland is the UK's biggest and employs 6,000 people directly

Manufacturing the more powerful, longer-lasting batteries in the UK will ensure its cars comply with trade rules agreed with the EU requiring at least 55% of the car's value to be derived from either the UK or the EU to qualify for zero tariffs when exported to the EU. "It has created a competitive environment for Sunderland, not just inside the UK but outside as well.

"Nissan's decision represents a genuine belief in Britain and a huge vote of confidence in our economy thanks to the certainty our trade deal with the EU delivers," he said. Speaking as the tie-up between Fiat Chrsyler and Peugeot Citroen was christened with new umbrella name Stellantis, boss Carlos Tavares said that the future of its Ellesmere Port plant depended on the support the UK government was prepared to offer after its decision to ban sales of new petrol and diesel cars after 2030."If you change, brutally, the rules and if you restrict the rules for business then there is at one point in time a problem," he said.

"This is obviously good news and will help the Nissan Leaf avoid any future tariffs, but we are going to need to see a lot more investment in battery production in the UK if we are to preserve the UK as a car manufacturer and exporter," said Professor David Bailey of Warwick University."The battery plant in Sunderland may be enough for Nissan's near-term plans to build tens of thousands of electric cars but the UK made 1.

I'll just leave this here. All it took was a little journalistic investigation

And they might find this even more attractive

VastHorizont Bet that was a painful tweet for you guys at the BBC....

Tears at the BBC

a good deal for some short term, what will it cost long term?

The people who set the agenda control the outcome and at this time the MSM are in the driving seat. The media in the UK is made up of the privately educated and privileged few who look upon ordinary working people as stupid and unimportant and treat them as a such. Fact.

When do we get an apology from the BBC for the bolloxs you broadcast every night for years about Brexit then .

wimapp Pleased to hear it hope the deal can be made to work for everyone else too.

This is more a relief than a victory. German car manufacturers are as much relived by this deal that is preserving the situation pre-brexit. But threatening the industry with no deal during 4 years has caused Tesla Gigafactory to be located in Berlin instead of in the UK.

The Brussels broadcasting corporation for the last 5 years have been saying mass recession, mass unemployment and the UK wouldn't get a deal.

It must really hurt to publish a positive Brexit story.

Will the EU see the compensation from the government as state aid and then impose a tariff to cars imported to the EU?

Great news, remainers seem gutted by good news for the country should take a long hard look at themselves.

Great. Cars are exported with zero tariffs but you can't buy a coat without being charged extortionate fees. I see where the government focused their deal on.

Sneaking this story out at 1am.

Are they being 'incentivised' to stay?

!!OH NO!! Not contrary to what the BBC anti government propaganda rhetoric has been telling the world would happen after Brexit. That is just unfair. That now makes the paparazzi BBC 100% wrong an all their scaremongering. Just imagine, the chaos in the newsroom this morning.

If there's demand for the product, manufacturers will flock. The paperwork might take some getting used to but over time it'll be second nature to businesses. We're moving up, get used to it.

Nissan getting compensation from government. We all paying for it .

What exactly is Nissan committing to . Nissan Leaf is not being updated with liquid cooled battery pack. Nissan has not committed to long term production of the Leaf at Sunderland. Long range EV manufacturing in UK will end. When Leaf production stops in the near future...

I’m sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the impending torching of worker rights

Yeah it’s all going tits up

That’s good new I guess, but I fail to see how not losing thousands of jobs that were already here is a net benefit of Brexit. And this is only possible because a deal was done to protect this specific sector.

YvetteHenson Shocking 😳

Business people can always find a way to survive.

YvetteHenson Femi_Sorry any comment on this? after years of claiming Nissan would leave

YvetteHenson Thoughts are with the BBC at this difficult time.

But remainers told us we would lose Nissan?

Nissan were given assurances aka cash to stay in Sunderland. brexit

You really gotta love deals that are positive for foreign businesses and hurt consumers am I right?

But absolutely no financial incentives offered by UK Govt (aka taxpayers)? 😆

A relief for Sunderland, good; Ellesmere Port needs watching, and investment from the government will be required to sustain this.

hahaha Femi_Sorry how stupid do you feel

I think this might be the first bit of good Brexit news I've heard

That’s great for their workforce and supply chain. On top of the £ rising it’s welcome news

Boom.

Oh, by the way, they're currently shut due to lack of parts being delivered. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 I'd love to see that theresa_may deal! Give it a year! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂

Despite Brexit

wow

Welcome to 55 hour working weeks Sunderland.

Oh dear remainers will be upset

Remoaners in the mud

good job BBC
