Nish Kumar talks to Anna Bonet about death threats, his frustrations with the Government and ‘provocateur’ comedians

And is he any good at that? “Not very good at all. I see my therapist every week, and we are working on it. I’m much better than I used to be, but it’s a slow process.”

“The only reason I haven’t talked about it before was because, to some extent, I was in denial that it was happening,” he explains. “Until someone tells you it is not normal for you to be thinking this way, until you actually examine the way you have been living, you don’t realise how much denial you’ve been living with.”

‘The cost-of-living crisis will turn the arts into a playground for people with rich parents,’ says Kumar His strength of feeling comes as little surprise; last month, when Sunak and Sajid Javid began a domino effect of Cabinet resignations, ultimately forcing Boris Johnson to resign, Kumar tweeted: “Balancing out the fact that I can’t stand Javid or Sunak with the fact that I love to see a rich white man brought down by Asians.” Thousands of angry replies accused him of his own racism and the story was picked up by the tabloids.

So no, he did not regret that. But he does know when he needs to apologise. Another recent story gleefully reported in certain media outlets was when Kumar retweeted a post about MP Brendan Clarke-Smith. The tweet falsely made out that the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Children and Families had put a mask over his genitals during the pandemic in order to mock theto wear them . It later transpired that the photo was taken in 2011 and Clarke-Smith had been fundraising.
