Like almost everyone, I was caught by surprise by Nicola Sturgeon’s resignation on Wednesday. I watched in tears, in disbelief, but also with a clear appreciation of why she had come to this decision.
My nine-year old daughter and I watched the press conference together - she’s grown up knowing only this powerhouse First Minister. Nicola has inspired this generation of girls as a confident, articulate leader, a person who cared as well as someone who commanded respect. Her vision of a fairer, more socially just Scotland has shaped our politics and our expectations of our country. The SNP’s solidly left of centre policy platform has been a strong point of contrast to both Westminster parties, and, along with Nicola’s leadership during the pandemic, has brought many people to our cause. The new leader must, in my view, stay true to this in how they take our movement forward.

She proved nothing of the sort. There's been innumerable, infinitely more successful in terms of legacy, female politicians from ordinary backgrounds all across the world. When it comes to listing achievements, Sturgeon is a political pygmy in comparison.

Overall she was an abysmal failure. If she was backed into a corner with actual facts she just spouted that she “couldn’t recall”. A chancer who finally got found wanting when it really mattered.

What did she actually succeed in doing she’s a local council leader who caused division and hatred she will be a foot note in Scotlands history nothing more than she deserves , now time to move on and call an election give us our power of speech back
She may have gotten into power but she failed in her duties, she failed on drug deaths, education, policing, council services, SNHS waiting times, cancer treatment, etc
Does the Record really believe what they write? If you think that Sturgeon & Co did a sterling job. Would you please publish that momentous event? The 'ordinary backgrounds,' you praise? Most of Scotland would tell you they showed what they were in every way possible. AMATEURS

Dear alisonthewliss i think you will find a lot of women previously impacted in politics and did so with a lot more grace than Sturgeon could ever muster
She has certainly proven that people from ordinary backgrounds can get carried away with adulation and own hype while ascending to roles way beyond their capability by simply harnessing the opportunity presented by supporters who can’t think beyond the basic tenets of a cause.
Look at he record success it isn’t.
