The P6 classes at Ballymacash PS are among kids from 11 NI schools taking part in the MARSBalloon STEM programme

The P6s are among youngsters from 11 Northern Ireland schools taking part in the space mission with Thales Alenia Space's MARSBalloon STEM programme which aims to spark an interest in science and technology.

"We went on then to introduce the main part of to, which was the Mars Balloon launch. The kids were all going to get a little tiny capsule and the badge of having to eat the Kinder egg from around the outside of it first. "They came up with a whole litany of suggestions and some were out there. We had to try and think of things that would travel well... while in our atmosphere but might change then when they got up. They couldn't believe this was going to be sent up."We just would love to think that makes a little spark that just goes up in somebody's mind that is the start of something and that they would go on to have a career in one of the STEM subjects.

"You have minus 50 temperature, pressures that are about one 100th of what you'd have below sea level - all that. "The ideas were incredible, some were fairly out there and some wanted to put a little sibling in it as well. "Some of the satellites we have sent up are for monitoring the planet, like the C02 levels we have to plants, water quality. We have put something up into space that's going to benefit here and the rest of the world."
