Who are Sinn Féin and what do they stand for?

Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald and Vice President Michelle O'Neill arrive at the count in Belfast's Titanic Exhibition Centre

Since the 1980s its electoral strength has grown and in 2003 it overtook the SDLP to become the biggest nationalist party in Northern Ireland. Mary Lou McDonald has been the party's president since February 2018 when she took over from Gerry Adams. She is a TD in the Republic of Ireland.

Foremost a united Ireland in kinder gentler way than the IRA!

Bombs in bins?

So Republican Sinn fein get 27 seats & become the biggest named party over DUP 25, But with the other unionist parties dont Unionists have by far the majority of seats with UUP 9 & SDLP 8 so totalling 42. Alliance 17 others 4 Chosing 1st minister apart, what will they actually do

As an American, does this mean I should prepare myself for a stream of terrorism news reports out of NI again? I thought NI peace was one of the very few bright spots of reconciliation after 9/11.

Freedom from the Tories……👍

The political wing of the IRA.

Hey BBC what were these 'troubles' all about? What could possibly have led to such a period of unrest bc I can't imagine anything short of a brutal occupation and disenfranchisement could cause such a thing. If that's the case I'm very sad the Irish couldn't be civil about it!

Very very short memories - Omagh 1998.

Who are the tory party and what do they stand for?Poverty, homelessness, levelling down, illegal government contracts, care home deaths,Russian money.....need I go on

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Exposes how British people don't have a clue about the devolved nations or British colonial history. Bbc kinda admitting that they dropped the ball eh?

Very murky people and past

Sinn Fein lol

I lived in n ireland for 4 years and see my best mate often in Belfast. Great country just like ireland and great people in the main. Just like Germany reunited and so should all of the Isle of ireland. Peace

I went to school for 10 years in the UK and they never mentioned Sinn Fein once. No wonder you have to explain it to us. Embarrassing.

Sectarian murder of men, women & children, rape, punishment shootings and beatings, drug trafficking, bank robberies, fuel laundering and money laundering.

'Sinn Féin is now committed to achieving Irish unification through purely peaceful means.' yet repeatedly warned of a return to violence if there was a hard border. 🤔

I have a feeling this will contain many well-informed and nuanced replies based on a sound knowledge of history from all perspectives.

Sinn Fein rise from the dead in Ireland, and even bigger SNP landslide in Scotland, Wales loses its last Tory councillor, the country is falling apart..... Don't worry though, Boris has a plan! 😂 And we have the cheek to say the Russia people are deluded by propaganda.

Who are the BBC and what do they stand for ? Mone ?

They are linked with a terrorist organisation. That’s all you need to know

The IRA.

Why you bring up 'the Troubles' as if its their fault? If England was occupied by a foreign power, would we not fight to take back our land? Good enough for Ukraine to fight Russians but Irish cant fight English? Ah, so that's how the Russian media does it

You are joking?

Political wing of the IRA.

Murderers and direct political and personal affiliations with illegal activities including murder.

Recall Ian Paisley Jr comment 'The futures orange' after DUP grubby deal with Theresa May, not so orange now eh 🇮🇪 raworth

You really are embarrassing yourself bbc.

Terrorists

The fact you have to explain it speaks volumes about London centric reporting.
