Newspaper headlines: PM 'pins hopes' on free twice-weekly Covid tests

Monday's papers are dominated by the news that everyone in England will be able to have two lateral flow Covid tests a week. Boris Johnson is hopeful the widespread testing will stop virus outbreaks "in their tracks", the i reports, with the tests able to produce results within 30 minutes. The mass rapid testing scheme has been revealed as the prime minister gives further details of his plan to loosen restrictions.

Moving away from the testing story, the paper says female teachers face sexual abuse within schools, according to the Nasuwt teaching union. Many schools are reportedly failing to confront the sexist harassment and abuse. The Daily Mail also leads with the two tests a week which will soon be available. The paper says the programme is a multi-billion-pound scheme.

Wear a mask get a test temp check and effective track and trace is all you need

This just screams to me that case numbers are getting too low now, so they need a way to boost those numbers back up, so they can ‘justify’ prolonging restrictions.

Great British Bank Holiday Quiz? Name the Cabinet Minister... 1. Uses our money to pay off those she has bullied? 2. Sent kids back to school for one day? 3. Rejected EU help for PPE and Test and Trace but spent £Billions on crap to his mates? Fingers on your British ‘buzzers’…

Why & which Tory backer has the contract to supply them? I thought the Vaccines where “the way to freedom” (please generate your inner William Wallace when shouting “Freedom”) ToriesOut

If you’re vaccinated & want to sit with only people who are vaccinated or folk getting tested morning noon & night, why bother getting vaccinated; you clearly do not think it works 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seems to me that the government are trying to invent some data to meet its dates strategy. Their own website says these tests have a false positive rate 0.32%. Get 10 million to do them every day and get 32,000 cases in false positives. Entering a phase of dangerous precedents.

Is there an election soon. Lol

Who can be arsed to get tested twice a week? Fail!

vaccines have stopped cases, or have they? Is Covid data simply a tool for social engineering so variants emerge, cases and (non flu) deaths go up or down according to the programme. At least in part!

Tell Bumbling Boris to ....... get lost!

This may have helped when cases were hitting 60k per day, now that we are at 2k per day these tests are pointless.

Why is this only in England ?iancruise1972 MattHancock BorisJohnson

Ridiculous idea, nearly as stupid as the Covid passports

We're in the middle of an information war for the hearts and minds of the masses and each one of you has a role to play. Many of us know that there is a high probability of a vaccine passport evolving into a social credit system BUT many people are unaware of it.

Boris is used to sticking stuff up his nose. In fact most of his cabinet are too.

If the vaccines are effective why everyone need to be tested twice a week

I don't know anyone who will take them.

Finally, a good use of under-utilised test capacity. If negative tests had been the passport to going out to shops, offices, theatres, restaurants etc we wouldn’t have needed such a damaging lockdown.

Unless I have symptoms I won't be taking one.

Trust the sun to be trash journalism. Foreign holidays are not important. When are the tabloids going to realise this? 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️

He has truly lost his mind - what is thinking

LFD aren't reliable enough to be used to 'prove' you are negative - only ~50% of positives picked up in Liverpool trials? Lazy government that can't be bothered to fix FTTIS (provide support!) or invest in public health system and would rather hand their mates £££ for tests! 🤬

This time last year people we’re moaning that they couldn’t get any sort of test not one, now roughly 135 million tests per week are being offered we are still having a good moan!?🤷‍♂️

I don't want two covid tests a week. I want a properly functioning FTTIS system - with the support to isolate so that people who actually have covid can stay home and not spread it! I want cases driven down as low as possible so that I don't need any tests!

What for? You take a test, it says your positive, and people ignore it. What is the point ? To push cases up? They don't want ease restrictions. This was also not the deal. We stayed in, the vulnerable are vaccinated. This is scandalous

They’re intent on more testing, and it’s not for the reason they’re telling you.

We've done our part you can end it now!! The elderly and vunerable have had the vaccine! Vacinate everyone else who wants it! Sod the rest! Open this country and let's start living again!!! 🙏👌😁

They can shove this free twice-weekly test up there arse, I haven’t once had it done nor will I have it, and I will continue to live my live mask-free

Does the PM also hope that the pubs and the bars will reopen without fail on April 12? Is the PM anxious to have his haircut on April 12? Please also search Google for lunar mountaineering and my BBC link is about Olympus Mons.

The .gov uses the comments on/ in twitter as a litmus test , if it sees enough detracters then it considers the majority of the country will accept whatever schemes it comesup with , if you / we / I are against it then it must be right .

Hmm... The Times suggests that 1 in 1000 LTF tests give a false positive. If the uptake on these free tests is huge, say 10m per week, then that gives 10,000 false positive results. It’s not difficult to see the Govt using this ‘surge’ to maintain restrictions

The “pandemic” is naturally dying out so they need to people tested to keep the virus relevant and prolong their powers!

Like the “free” NHS?

Don't want a test, want a vaccine...

Paid for by the kindness of Witty, Vallance, Hancock and Johnson out of their vast sums of wealth made on the back of all this ?

£1.3bn for tests which are pointless. Vaccinate everyone who will accept it. Then just carry on. There is nothing else to be done. This is fear based control at its most insidious. Mass testing will achieve nothing at this point. Never mind those of us that will simply refuse it.

Comparing vaccines: country of origin, safety, efficacy, and approval Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Sputnik V, Sinopharm, Bharat Biotech (COVAXIN), Medicago (CoVLP)

Why if the vaccine isn’t a scam?

BTW - where's the infrastructure for such massive testing? In the same place as Brexit Customs infrastructure, most likely - nowhere.

Totally unnecessary and unjustified, which one of the government's 'friends' are going to benefit from these tests, 2021 the year of the sheep...😷

'Free' testing? Who is paying for it then? The magic money tree?

But at a rough estimate 126m a week; sure sounds like the NHS going to be busy plus vaccinations sounds more hope than plan. rapid test seem sketchy last time; so how many false positives? more lockdowns on false tests? Silo required me thinks.

Getting desperate now!

Blah blah blah. Open shit up already, Boris, there's a good lad.

Idiot. Vaccination brings resistance, doesn't stop transmission or infection. UK will struggle with COVID until it heeds science and locks down until eliminated (no use relying on £37b track-and-trace). Anything else is business hogwash, profit before lives.

How many shares does he have in companies making the test kits?

These are not free, at least not to those of us who are paying our taxes!!

BBCWorld say UK vaccination 'her immunity' will fail according to BorisJohnson as he starts to panic about full time testing
