Council plans to switch off street lights in new budget to save costs

More street lights could be switched off overnight in Newport to cut costs.Newport City Council plans to roll-out its switch-off scheme across the borough as part of its 2023/24 budget setting,Newport's only Green Party councillor, Lauren James, said that safety should come before energy saving, according to theMs James, who represents the Shaftesbury ward, said: "We have still got to make sure people are safe.

"I hope that the council is looking into it, and making sure that there are things like high-visibility strips on steps, so it's safe for those who do have to be out at those times."Independent councillor Andrew Sterry said residents in his Lliswerry ward have expressed concerns at the council's proposal.Mr Sterry said: "I am against this proposal as I received many comments from my residents and they're extremely concerned about crime rates going up.

The plans include a 9.5% council tax rise due to "increasing costs and pressures faced by the council".

When is the BBC getting shut down?

What's the point in having street lamps if you won't use them?

Motion Detectors ?

Led and and Solar panels on top but you know to hell with peoples safety. What’s the point in paying Council tax if you can’t provide what people pay for

North Korea style.

Health and safety ?

Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having street lights

Investment in solar panels would help these councils. Yes they'll be a cost to that however the council will meet any long term emissions cutting and money will be saved (in the long run)

Not a good idea

Epping Council does it already, have been doing it for years!!

Up goes crime 2000 percent

..maybe switch them on later and off ealier....but they definitely help keep you safe at night

Tory tax Evasion story?

That’ll be a new 30k a year job created now doubt more than operating the things can we employ someone to pick up the dog shit while we are at it or is standing in dung part and parcel of a cost of living crisis

Kerb!

Dangerous I fell over at 7am as it was dark and drizzly didn’t see the herb no street light there

Erm, it’s been happening here for 12 years?

Street lights are for people's safety. So it'll become a muggers delight then.... especially with certain ethnic minorities who seem to be committing a lot of crime of late. Would the councils be libel then?

Nationalise the grid 😉

Solar-wind hybrid street lights 💡? Those that dim and brighten when someone or something passes nearby?

bring a torch coz without them its pitch black

The lights went out in Newport decades ago.

😂 great idea ! Save the trees ! Get mugged or robbed even more…… such a good idea 👍🏼

I'll turn off my council tax payment because you can sure bet in April they will put it up again

That'll make the streets safer 🤦🤦

This is insane, specially when crime sees uptick in recent months.

That's insane Then you have ppl breaking in and stealing stuff out of ppl houses at night that not on.

Think it's time all the people stood together. Are they really seeing how far we can be pushed ?

The thieves and burglars are jumping for joy

Surely it makes long term sense to change over street lights to ones powered by solar panels placed on top to virtually eliminate the need for electricity. We have the technology, so why councils don't start implementing that for future long term savings benefit is beyond me.

Were any women part of the decision making? It’s dangerous enough for women alone at night without plunging them into darkness

With the level of car theft and vandalism on the rise? The UK is becoming a joke.

There are safer ways to save! End juicy government contracts and get the nations scrubbers off the dole!

Queue increase in crime and lone women curfew.

my council has litterally been doing this for 4 years lmao. It makes walking home from work at 2-3 in the morning kinda dangerous.... and the danger multiplys if you're a women lets not lie

Let’s all just go and live in a cave

I wish they would switch off a few more where I live. Night time should be dark and I have this bright white light outside my bedroom window.

How you supposed to walk safe in the streets at dark?

This deserves the same backlash as the dress advert

Been off from midnight around here for several years

Happening in Yorkshire all the time… & we are not bothered.. Maybe in London keep them on for security reasons.

Are they taking the fucking piss?

Pretty on paper idea. Give your heads a wobble and get a grip on reality life. 😂

Solar Led Hybrids with PIR would be brilliant.

sgloscouncil do (or did) this. Once got a late bus from Bristol not realising, utterly terrifying walking the ten min journey home. Literally pitch black (just near parkway station). Never did that again! Yet a taxi costs +£30 for a six mile journey (in 2014!).

Great more head ache for the Police and EMS. 🙄

Why? We're not some broke third world country. Surely we can afford to keep the lights on?

Great can’t wait to see some of these savings passed on to the hard working public who fund the lights 😂

Oh nice... well, nice for the rapists anyway. I see lots of lawsuits on the horizon.

Yeah that will be good for crime figures

Welcome to my world - not street lighting within miles. No light pollution, so clear nights are amazing.

yet nadhimzahawi and his 3 mill in unpaid tax isn't a story

Don’t worry about the hike in street crime and road traffic accidents. As long as former council staff get those gold-platted pensions, that’s all that matters…

I don’t feel safe as it is walking home alone at night and now this

Councils will make any kind of budget cutbacks except for getting rid of their 100k+ officers!

What about Nadhim Zahawi dodging millions in tax. I don't see any news on your website about this.

Really don't see the problem with this. And aren't we all supposed to be saving energy?

Oh Great..! a muggers & burglars paradise..

Turn them off during the day.

There was a survey available to give your opinions on Newport Council budget cuts.

Streetlights have been turned off across the country for years. It is not news. Please report Braverman’s language again, Zahawi’s financial corruption and the duplicitous strategy to pass laws to oppress strikers and the public

Not had street lights for years here

So let’s make the streets less safe at night to save a few quid. Bonkers

Just watch the crime rate climb there!

Been happening for years around here ... Burglars paradise...

What bright spark thought of this dim idea? Hopefully someone will see the light and extinguish this before the criminals come out of the shadows.

Newport just needs a Rolls Royce SMR with remarkable new advanced fuel rods from LightbridgeCorp and ‘Bobs yer uncle’ .. sorted for 100 years .. 😉🇬🇧🇺🇸

Won't make difference - UK is probably the worse lit country in the world - it also has the most potholes & the worse workmanship used in repairing them.

Better together, we got our sovereignty back! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧 this is what it feels to be British innit

Why are we still legally forced to pay for an ever degraded experience and minimal services with annual hikes. Takes the absolute piss. Roads are a state, bin collection become more and more sporadic and garden waste is now a premium 8 month service, and now this.

so do we get a rebate on our council tax? If so put it forwards to more police as crime rate goes through the roof. I do dispair sometimes

It would be unwise if someone walking in a dark in a scared place.

Britain is a third world country with a gucci belt.

A public safety issue NewportCouncil

Surprised this isn’t countrywide tbh given the energy crisis

So the council spends all that money upgrading to LED lighting only for them to be switched off for half the night? Good going 👏🏻

Typical labour council for you but the bbc don't tell you that......

Is England a safe place to live anymore?

That should make the streets safer

Some of Essex has done this for years.

Been going on in the country for over 10 years...... catch up.

Will you be covering the Zahawi tax story?

Have the council still got those shares in Duracell and Maglite torches?

Crime spirals, council say they will spend £3 million to determine the cause

So going green is working out well?

Not just street lights,, I think it's appalling with the amount ov traffic lights on junctions

And put people at risk. Well done NCC 🙄
