New Zealand bans 'military-style' semi-automatic weapons after mosque terror attack

The law is expected to be formally in place by 11 April but a temporary measure has been immediately brought in to stop anyone rushing out to buy the weapons.It means semi-automatics and assault rifles now require a special police permit to be purchased.

Penalties for owning the banned guns are also set to be increased from the current three years in jail or maximum $4000 fine. The PM acknowledged that farmers and people in rural areas legitimately own guns for killing pests and putting down injured animals. Two classes of firearms commonly used for this purpose are not covered by the law change."This will not be popular among some of our members but... we believe this is the only practicable solution," said Federated Farmers Rural Security spokesman Miles Anderson.

Some relatives have been unhappy over the time it has taken - Muslim practice is that a person should be buried as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours.

Even a pistol no matter how smaller it is can take away precious life of another human being. We should ask ourselves where did we go wrong? All these laws are wrong and can only protect the murderer.

American are genuinely upset about this, some actually believe that their 2nd amendment applies to the whole world.

It’s too late now 50 innocent Muslims died at a place of worship and many injured and in critical conditions, why’s was these kind of weapons in NZ being sold at the first place, I thought NZ would not even have this kind of weapons at all , I was very very wrong.

We cannot point to islam as the inspiration for the islamist terror or judge all muslims as terrorists when the terrorists are muslim but we can judge all whites and ask them to give up their guns and freedom of expression when the terrorist is white.

And behind you sale weapons to Arabia.

I was very suprised to see that New Zealand has such gun laws. Anyone can buy a gun legally. The USA has more control?

Why any country needs to have these weapons available to civilians in the first place baffles me.
