New Lytham-born 'working class' Health Secretary Steve Barclay who backed Boris to get a place in the Cabinet

After spending years supporting Theresa May and Boris Johnson in largely behind the scenes roles, Steve Barclay achieved his biggest promotion when he was named Health Secretary last night.

As well as working at major financial and law firms, he took on roles non-elected political roles for the Tories and went on to be become an MP in North East Cambridgeshire in 2010. Despite his record as a government loyalist, he had to wait until after the following election in 2015 before he made it to the ministerial ranks as a junior whip.

After a relatively slow start to his ministerial career, Mr Barclay – a Leave supporter – was catapulted to the Cabinet front rank as Brexit Secretary in November 2018. After that, he moved to become chief secretary to the Treasury in February 2020, and was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in September 2021.
