Pharmaceutical company Vertex has announced it has signed a five-year deal with the Scottish government.The drugs help improve lung health, but were to cost about £100,000 per patient, per year. The SMC previously rejected the use of the drug saying there were uncertainties about the long-term health benefits of Orkambi and Symkevi in relation to their costs.
Orkambi has been shown in clinical trials to improve lung function and respiratory symptoms in people with cystic fibrosis.
This is great news but it’s sad that it only got approved after a MP’s granddaughter got diagnosed. I assume that has something to do with it as people have been wanting this medication to be approved for a long time. Also, why would it only be in Scotland that has approved it?
