New Covid variants are ‘very unlikely’ to stop Britain getting back to normal by summer, a top scientist said.
She said she was ‘very optimistic’ that the rapid immunisation drive would allow the Government to ease restrictions as planned. The emergence of new variants that could be resistant to vaccines is seen as the biggest risk to that timetable. But Prof Peacock said the more concerning strains from abroad showed no signs of surging in the UK and were unlikely to jeopardise the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown.
He said surge testing would be rolled out to the south London area as a ‘precautionary measure’, adding the person appears to have stayed at home and there is no evidence of onward transmission.supports HTML5 video
