Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman celebrated his 61st birthday - but says the present he really wants is the Euro 2024 trophy, writes Scott McDermott in Amsterdam.
“Scotland were in a qualifying group with Spain. They beat them and they fought for first place right to the end. I know all about them and I know their mentality. They love to fight on the pitch. I don’t like to talk about individual players but I was impressed with Scotland in the qualifiers. When they fight, they get the support of their fans, which is a powerful combination.
Ake knows all about Robertson through his Holland team-mate and Anfield skipper, Virgil van Dijk. But the 29-year-old has also been impressed by Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay and Aston Villa’s John McGinn this term. “He’s a top player and a great captain for Scotland. But it’s not about who is the best left-back in the Premier League - I don’t see it that way. As a team Scotland are improving every year and it’s good to see. They’re going to give us a really tough game on Friday night.”
