bosses have agreed to remove footage used in movie Bird Box of a real-life train disaster that occurred in Quebec, Canada.
The footage in question is from 2013 when an unattended freight train carrying crude oil derailed and caused an explosion in the town of Lac-Mégantic. Over 30 buildings in the town were destroyed and 47 people died as a result. It appears in Bird Box early on in the movie when Sandra Bullock’s character Malorie is flicking through news channels airing reports of ‘unexplained mass suicides’ and only features for a matter of seconds.
It was confirmed in January that the footage was of the real-life train disaster and the mayor of Lac-Mégantic had requested its removal. Netflix bosses initially refused to take it out of the movie, but a spokesperson has now confirmed to BBC that the footage will be removed.Netflix released a statement that read: ‘We’re sorry for any pain caused to the Lac-Megantic community.’
