The world's largest streaming service explains what it thinks was behind an unexpected easing in its global subscriber growth.

Netflix sees 1980s nostalgia series Stranger Things helping boost subscribers in the current third quarter of the yearNetflix shares have tumbled in after-hours trading following revelations it lost customers in its core US market for the first time in eight years.

The world's largest video streaming service also fell short of its own forecast for new subscribers overseas in the second quarter of the year. It added 2.7 million worldwide subscribers between April and June - far below its prediction of five million - taking the total to 151.6 million. The figures showed it lost 120,000 net customers in the US over the three months.

Netflix admitted it performed worse in territories where it had raised prices - including the UK - to help fund more original content as it prepares to lose its most popular old favourites, including The Office and Friends, to rivals such as Disney and NBC who are clawing back their own material as they launch their own offerings.Netflix shares lost 12% in extended trading in New York after the results were declared.

If the performance is replicated in Thursday's regular trading session, it will be the largest decline in Netflix's price in three years, taking about $18bn in market value from the company.

Well I've considered cancelling my NetflixUK subscription.. they crap they put on it, hardly any new material

Why haven't you covered this Tory Party antisemitism, caught on video, from 4 months ago?

If they didn’t sell off supposed Netflix originals like the new Zac Efron Ted Bundy movie to Sky who then hide it behind a subscription to Sky Cinema, maybe more people would subscribe. An extra €20 a month for that subscription alone is a lot of money

startrekcbs has killed netflix

Go woke, go broke netflix

Trialled it.. thought it was pretty crap...binned it.

So

It’s called ‘market saturation’ ....

Recently they release only one or two good shows per year then the rest are low cost production rubbish. And they keep increasing the price. Now I watch (as you go) when they issue something good I renew my subscription then suspend after watching.

Yep a lack of quality new content. A B rated program/film provider.

When they have nothing to show.

If they put decent films up instead of crap then maybe it would be different

It's peaked.

Perhaps if they let you use it I. Holiday might help

Growth slows.... But still growing which is to be expected 🤔 Eventually all subscription services plateau Netflix has been a phenomenal success and price increases will always happen with the demand for more. Just ask any SKY customer about price increases mid contract!

Coincides with price increases 🤷‍♂️

Yes, no one wants to watch movies from 1987 any more...

Go woke go broke

Lack of new content and increase of price.

My growth stopped years ago. I know how they feel.
