Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has said that announcing previous games too early hurt the studio. Its next game looks set to be revealed closer to release to help combat “work-life balance issues”

“You’re right, we did announce Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Part 2 way in advance, but that actually caused a little bit of the work-life balance issues that we’ve sometimes had at the studio,” Druckmann said.

“By delaying that announcement a bit, we could play with the schedule more and we’re more conscious now about how we’re approaching production.and there’s another project that I will not say anything about that’s beyond that that we’re also very much excited for.”, Druckmann said last June that Last of Us 2’s commercial success had enabled the studio to “take on multiple projects, more than we’ve ever had at the same time”.

This really benefits the consumer too. We don’t have to wait for a terribly long time. Announcing games closer to their release is something I’ve always wanted to become normalized in this industry.

This. Don’t be like what CDPR did with announcing Cyberpunk 2077 in 2013 or Ubisoft announcing Beyond Good or Evil 2 in 2008.

Naughty_Dog can lay in the bed of garbage they made with their wokeness. The fans wanted it and you guys ruined it 🤷‍♂️. Theres only one LastOfUs. The second one doesn't count in most of our eyes 🙂. But thanks for ruining the biggest game of the year.

Stop letting gamers put so much pressure on your team that you have to rush a game out. At this point as gamers we should be used to release dates getting pushed back. Nobody wants to see a game launch like cyberpunk did. So with that said...The game is ready when it's ready.

thank the Gods. we all need a major reality check up 😂

I mean, considering what happened with TLOU 2 and how they burnt through so many animators they had to hire film industry ones because game devs refused to join the death march that was that game's development, these changes were long overdue. Still, better late than never.

dont worry guys!!!111 its just ketchup

IDC what druckman produces.

Isn’t this the studio that stated they did 100 hr work weeks as a positive. This feels like cover for the leaks that happened before tlou2 released

Hope it helps!

naughty dog create masterpieces no question. but tbf they usually annouce a game at E3 but they dont release the game for years, the public look forward to their games because its gonna be good, even if it takes too long! :D

Square Enix would never xD

*remaster master master master tlou1* yesssss

They're crunching their employees again

Been saying this. I’d rather y’all keep your mouths shut until you get close to release. Trailers, gameplay, info and all. Keep it to yourselves until you are ready AND the release is near.

Makes sense. When you have a project the suits get antsy to get people excited to spend. When you announce a project the suits get worried of losing money from lost hype. And in the whole industry announcing early has ALWAYS hurt the project.

Naughty dog games will leak again trust me

hahaahahha

Translation- playstation got no games

I hope this becomes a standard. It's tiring seeing so many games being announced for 2024, only to be delayed once the time approaches

I like this new direction for Sony. The idea of announcing games around 1 year- 6 months before release is healthier for the company and gamers.

They dont need to worry about that. Their next game will probably have its entire script leaked before it gets revealed.

Nobody cares

I like to know if some games are being worked on or not at the present, and at some point it will likely be released. I would like it if studios were a bit more open and honest about progress on some games

Not sure how anyone could ever be mad at this but I’m sure the internet will find a way.

He regrets announcing Factions?

Regardless of announcing games too early, Naughty Dog still managed to deliver high quality masterpieces for their fans (Uncharted 4 & The Last of Us Part 2). I’ll always commend them for pulling through like they always do. Granted, their new plan of announcing games is smarter.

The last of us Part 2 Remake

The Xbox model since E3 2022. And Xbox has been hated on since then for only showing what's coming in the next 12 months at each show.

this is exactly what I want. announce a game when it is within a year of release. not this 4-5 years waiting BS. zelda TotK is now close to release. but it was announced 3+ years ago.

ND leakers reading this:

This is good. I’ve always thought games should stop announcing dates until they are done or close to done. Announcing early only forces crunch if they realize they need more time.

some a$$hole will leak it anyways

Announcing games too early or not being honest about them?

Yeah but yall got a leaking problem so its gunna get out eventually unless u fixed that problem

Honestly that’s what every studio/ developer should do depending on the project

I mean when you go admittedly woke and then the data miners find literal videos of cutscenes killing off a beloved character, then you just crap out story wise about 63% through. Your game tends to suffer.

So faction 2 2023 TLOU 3 2024

AEGRO_84 Please don't start following xbox's work model. That's why they never put out anything. It's ok it's called overtime and it is a choice which people love.

The Todd Howard model.

Good. Will avoid crunch. Don’t see anything wrong with announcing a game in development without a release date though.

That’s honestly for the best. Announce the game when they’re sure the deadline can be met so they don’t crunch employees. Good choice.

It is more a planning issue than an announcing issue.

insomniacgames watch and learn

Neil Druckmann given creative control is what hurt the studio, not announcing games or leaks lmao

Good idea.

I'm not always the biggest fan of his, but in this case, I think he's 100% correct. If more studios took this approach it'd be far less stressful on the teams & likely reduce the number of delays, thus not frustrating the fanbases as much. Seems like it should be the standard.

Remember how Cyberpunk was when it launched and that it was originally gonna release in April of that year.

'Combat work-life balance issues' is just another way of saying, 'we wanna try to avoid crunch time by saying this game will come out at this time' and give the dev team an unreasonable time frame. All in all, this is a fantastic statement from Neil.

Damn straight I bought a ps4 because of the initial reveal of TLOU2 thinking it would be out that year, ended up waiting multiple years for it to finally release

Crunch?

That's a good thing. Others should do the same

The way it should be for all studios. Announcing and showing completely misleading cg trailers needs to go in the bin permanently

He's going to combat the work-life balance by making sure they no longer have a life to balance.

many software houses make early revelations of their games. 90% everything goes smoothly. it's the game director's bloating ego that hurt the entire staff of a game studio.

Let's Burnout the employees without everyone knows until the release

I wholeheartedly believe this whole new approach is due to 1. All the reports of crunch. 2. All the death threats from idiots online at the launch of Tlou2. I feared Sony would take steps to distance themselves from gamers cuz of that and I think it has come to fruition.

No shit! Developers shouldn’t show games until the game is way into development. Only teasers should be allowed too because that doesn’t reflect the end product.

Taking a paper out of Capcom's book.

Translation: announcing games early makes us work the shit out of our employees and they don't want that.

I just hope it’s a new IP we have enough last of us and uncharted content for a while

No he is the one who hurt the studio by his piss poor leadership skills.

I wish they’d hurry up and announce the native PlayStation 5 version of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗨𝘀: 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝗜.

why i dont show clients their designs too soon before the appt

Mhm
