If you’re not a Tory it’s hard to defend the union when Boris Johnson is its champion, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

More people in England have already forgotten the name of the Scottish finance minister who resigned last week than ever knew it before the scandal broke. Derek Mackay was hardly a celebrity in Scotland, but his disgrace made news there for more than a few hours. Mackay had compulsively messaged a 16-year-old boy on social media, calling him “cute” and offering him trips out. The behaviour was “foolish”, he said. Opponents called it predatory.

Yet another metropolitan whine about nasty nationalism that fails to even recognise *British* nationalism. It's a blind spot for unionists as big as the dark side of the moon.

Correct but with caveats. Civic nationalism to gain self-determination is happening in Scotland. Ethnic nationalism to balm the realisation that you're not Billy big balls anymore is happening in England. ftfy 👍

The SNP are our HS2 independence we get on until they take us directly out of Westminster to a free Scotland. No stops.

How to compare English racism and Scottish pragmatism theSNP Conservatives

Try making this argument about nationalism and self-determination to the Irish (for example). Every case is different and has to be judged on its own merits.

Here's a road map. Scotland needs an economic Union, but prefers a collaborative Europe to separatist England/UK. Independence is route to Europe via the only way possible- SNP. After Independence and EU membership, Scottish politics will split left, right, centre. Simples.

The same old blind spot is here again in this article: the idea that 'nationalism' is only a description of separatist movements. Unionism is also nationalism. There are VERY few people in UK politics who are not nationalists.

'unionists miss Ruth Davidson’s voice in the debate. The former Tory leader in Edinburgh was an adept reader of Scottish politics' RD was/is entirely a media construct answering preprepared answers to softball questions. She wilted under any type of real scrutiny.

The SNP is a vehicle to Independence. Once we get there people will be free to get off. I do wish that journalists would come and talk to people in Scotland before writing these articles. Some of them do seem to lean on lazy cliches too often.

Propagandist spin. When the voting takes place you'll find a different attitude north of the border. The SNP track record for doing beneficial things in Scotland is at an all time low.

They want 'independence' to join up with the totalitarian regime?

this idiot knows nothing about Scotland and should stick to writing articles about how shoes aren’t shaped like feet

Lol. I assumed this was an article about the U.S.

SNP is nationalist in name only.

That's awesome! I hope more of Europe wakes up! I was just talking about this with some friends today. The only way forward for Europe if it is to survive is a strong resurgence of nationalism across the continent

South of the border see nationalism as England wales and Scotland, north of the border see nationalism as Scotland alone

This feels like a false equivalence.
