Over the past three years the spectre of a rampant English nationalism has gripped the imagination of the liberal left. The rise of a racist, backward-looking, imperialistic and xenophobic political force has been conjured up by politicians and commentators alike, serving as a convenient whipping boy for Brexit chaos and other travails.

Nationalism in England is viewed as fine and dandy yet Nationalism in Ireland particularly in Northern Ireland is condemned outright.

Englishness as an identity has been allowed to become toxic. That’s why people identify either as Global Brits or hyper local yet outward looking (Manc, Scouse, Londoner, etc...) over being English, that was lost to the little Englanders. All that’s left is football & cricket.

Nationalism nowadays means not wanting your country changed against your will and without your consent. These are the levels of absolute contempt and snobbery that the media and political establishment has for people, and which people like Trump and Farage feed off.

I was a member of both English and Scottish independence groups on Facebook. The Scottish movement is built round forward thinking, positive change. English independence is built round ignorance, hatred and a sense of superiority. Apparently they’re both called nationalism.
