National Television Awards shock as Emmerdale wins best soap and Corrie's Peter Ash beats EastEnders' Max Bowden to best newcomer

THE National Television Awards delivered a shock as Emmerdale won Best Soap while Coronation Street's Peter Ash beat EastEnders' Max Bowden to Best Newcomer.

Matthew Wolfenden, who plays David Metcalfe, said: "This is the fourth year that Emmerdale has picked up this award. "We love our show, we dearly, dearly love it and this proves to us that you still love watching it and that means so much."The ITV soap has had some big storylines this last yearKatie McGlynn won Serial Drama Performance for her role as Sinead Tinker in Coronation Street earlier in the eveningEmmerdale has had some major storylines including the factory fire, Victoria's rape, the controversial grooming storyline of Jacob Gallagher and most recently, the murder of Graham Foster.
