As a rule, I never apologise for something I didn’t do. And I certainly don’t demand an apology when I haven’t personally been wronged. But remarkably, it appears I’m in a minority.
But it strikes me that those demanding this apology likely fall into one of two categories. They’re either woke ‘white saviours’ indulging in their preferred pastime of virtue signalling. Or, they’re young black people or activists who think they stand to benefit – financially or otherwise – from repeatedly waxing on about a historic injustice that may have had no effect on their lives.
Then there’s the fact that slavery, sadly, has been part of history from time immemorial and the transatlantic slave trade is just one small part of that narrative. In Europe, wealthy people bought and controlled land and hired people to work on it. In Africa, private land didn’t exist in the same way, so wealthy families bought people instead, and owned the products of their labour. Furthermore, when Europeans did arrive, it was often the African slave owners themselves who sold their own people into the transatlantic trade.
