Sperm counts worldwide have plummeted by 62 per cent since 1973, according to research published this month by Professor Hagai Levine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem When 28-year-old Kevin Button told his father that a doctor had diagnosed him as infertile, his dad laughed it off and said; “Oh, what does he know!”. Button, a builder from south Wales, didn’t feel too upset or stressed either, at first. “I was in denial,” he says, now aged 37, looking back at that confusing time.
Soon afterwards, Button’s relationship broke down, his mental health deteriorated, and he turned to drink and drugs. “My life was turned upside down. Now, I know that there are loads of men in my situation, suffering in silence – but I didn’t know that then.”When it comes to fertility, men have been mostly absent from the public conversation.
The test involves a “clinical-grade” sperm test taken by the patient at home and picked up by courier, with results available within 48 hours after the lab receives the sample. Superdrug says that men are then able to access the chemist’s medical team to ask questions about what they should do next.
