James Duggan strangled Rebecca Ryle to death in Australia and left the teenager's half naked body in a field almost exactly 20 years ago. He was deported back to the UK in 2022 after emigrating from Liverpool as a child, but has now been hauled back before the courts in connection with a burglary at a pub.
Duggan, of no fixed address but formerly of School Lane, has three previous convictions for four offences, including receiving a life imprisonment with a minimum term of 11 years in April 2006 after being convicted of Ms Ryle's murder. The Western Australian Supreme Court heard during his trial that he had met his 19-year-old victim in a pub in Perth on the evening of May 5 2004 and offered to walk her home.
He was given a sexual risk order in August 2022 following his return to this country, due to a "sexual motive" behind the killing. Duggan was then locked up for 26 weeks and subjected to indefinite notification requirements in January 2023 after being convicted of breaching his SRO and battery, having failed to inform his offender manager of a relationship he had formed with a woman who he then punched in the stomach.
