A mum had to plan her own funeral just days after giving birth - after her severe heart failure was dismissed as 'normal signs of pregnancy'. Ella Tranter began suffering from swollen legs, weight gain, itchiness, high blood pressure and breathlessness in the third trimester of her pregnancy.
Ella was diagnosed with postpartum cardiomyopathy - a rare type of heart failure between the last month of pregnancy and five months post delivery with no determinable cause. Terrified, the mum, who is married to 32-year-old IT technician Gavin Tranter, began making her own funeral arrangements including what songs to play and details to tell her newborn daughter when she grows up.
"That night after lying down, I couldn't breathe. I felt like I was suffocating. I just couldn't catch my breath. Gav had googled my symptoms and said I wonder if it's postpartum cardiomyopathy and I remember saying 'don't be daft, that's serious.'
