A mum of a teenage boy says she has always had to battle 'for every scrap of education' her son has received in his lifetime as the fight continues. Daniel Franklin should have started at a Nottinghamshire college in September but his mum says a county council has failed to make the necessary arrangements to allow him to enrol.
Julie said: "During COVID I had to fight for every scrap of education that he had due to being clinically vulnerable to begin with but then his health declined. It was only March 2022 when the council put in a tutor, but they took it away in July because the company doesn't deal with post-16 education."He was supposed to start college on September 5.
Derbyshire Live asked the county council about Daniel's situation and received the following reply: "We cannot comment on individual cases but in general where a child or young person has specific medical needs then the school or college they are attending has the responsibility to ensure that their staff have the necessary training and experience required.
"My son is currently in hospital and every morning the hospital school come and see him regarding schoolwork so it appears he can get an education in hospital but not in the community. It's ridiculous. The local authority won't contact me - they never do unless I contact them first. The college has told them what they need, and the local authority ignored them like they do me.
The staff Daniel needs at school need to be trained to use his equipment and complete yearly theory and practical training in the event of tracheostomy and life support. Mrs Potter-Tate has officially complained to the council about Daniel's lack of education. She said: "He had a complex operation this summer and just wants to get back to some sort of normality, which includes interacting with people.
