Anita Brown has fought endlessly for the right to choose how she dies instead of suffering a slow, prolonged deathAFTER being diagnosed with incurable cancer in 2016, Anita Brown has fought endlessly for the right to choose how she dies.Anita says she's fighting for the choice of when and how she leaves this worldWhen the consultant told me softly that my bladder cancer was incurable, I could barely catch my breath.
The consultant gravely explained that although more tests were needed, it was very likely a cancerous tumour. With my mind racing, I got dressed in silence and walked shakily into the room next door where Tim was waiting. When I told him the news, he fell to his knees in shock, then we held each other and sobbed. Back home that evening I phoned my son Ashleigh, 25. When he heard the word cancer he didn’t know what to say either.
Ironically, before I was diagnosed with cancer, I’d come across the pressure group Dignity In Dying on social media. It campaigns to change the law in the UK on assisted dying and give terminally ill people control over when and how they die. Back then I had no idea that one day the organisation would have such relevance to me.
Even if we managed to crowdfund the money, there’s the risk Tim and Ashleigh could be prosecuted if they helped me arrange my death or accompanied me. How could I die peacefully knowing they might face prison?Anita Brown wants to wear a black wedding dress with champagne, cupcakes and the Foo Fighters players when she dies
In the year since I last had treatment, I’ve had my bladder removed and a stoma bag fitted. I take medication to manage my pain, and have good days and bad days. The last few months have given me time to plan my death down to the last detail. It may just be a dream right now, unless the law is changed soon, but it doesn’t stop me hoping. I want a party with all the people I love.
It’s crushing that no such place exists in the UK at the moment, but I refuse to give up hope that things will change while there is still time for me. If it doesn’t then I must choose between waiting for a natural death that terrifies me and traumatises my family, or find another way to control when my life ends. Will
