A single mum stole £50,000 worth of designer kids Moncler and Fendi goods from the store where she worked before flogging them on social media.
The single mum, of Glover Place in Bootle, was then promoted to weekend supervisor in March 2022, becoming responsible for opening and closing the office on Saturdays and Sundays. Enquiries by the business also revealed that she had been advertising the sale of designer children's wear via Instagram pages known as Chaos Childrenswear and Samuel's Style, including wares still bearing her employer's logo. CCTV footage meanwhile showed Makin taking items from the warehouse and using forged labels in order to facilitate false deliveries to her own personal customers, as well as removing tags from items including the Moncler coat.
The latter was shown to have had funds amounting to £29,424.37 paid into it during her time working at the store. Makin was later arrested at her grandma's house, an address where some of the orders had been dispatched to. Under interview, she denied having stolen any items and told detectives that she would "sell her son's old designer clothes online". The mother-of-one also claimed that the clothes found by officers "had been bought legitimately herself". Makin added that she "liked to dress her son nicely" but had "saved money to do so". She has no previous convictions.
Makin admitted theft by employee, fraud and possession of criminal property. She wiped away tears with a tissue in the dock as she was handed a two-year imprisonment suspended for two years plus 300 hours of unpaid work and a rehabilitation activity requirement of up to 20 days.
