Mueller: Identifying each AFC West team’s biggest concern from a GM’s perspective

. Both have similar DNA: tough, hard-working, consistent personalities who will have just as much to do with changing culture in the locker room as changing results on the field. That’s an expensive proposition for an upgrade in intangibles, but I understand it and think it was needed.

The strength of this team is its defense, which holds the key to the Broncos’ success in 2023. I think it is the most underrated unit in the entire conference. I don’t have much worry about this side of the ball: 14th-best scoring defense, second-best in getting off the field on third downs and the seventh-lowest opponent passer rating allowed for the 2022 season are prime examples of what the Broncos need more of this season.

This front office will be working with its third head coach in three years. I happen to know the personalities on that side of this marriage, and I think they will fit. They are low-ego people who, if given time to jell with the new coach and this staff, can improve in the win column. GM George Paton was by my side in Miami, and despite our titles, we knew coach Nick Saban was in charge, so Paton has the experience to draw from with the current setup in Denver.

Because of this, I am not worried about the new communication structure. I’m only worried about the additions made this year being good enough to help Denver in the win column.What sets the Chargers apart in this division is that they are the only team with a defensive-minded head coach. And to that end, when I see a team ranked 21st in points allowed per game and mediocre rankings in third-down conversion rate and opponent passer rating, I wonder what this defense can hang its hat on.
