An interim injunction by the European Court of Human Rights stopped ministers’ first attempt to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda in 2022 The Government has overturned all the amendments to the Rwanda deportation legislation made by the House of Lords, despite Rishi Sunak’s hopes to have the first flights depart in the spring.

MPs gathered in the House of Commons on Monday evening to vote on ten amendments lodged by peers, setting up another showdown over the legislation in the upper chamber tomorrow night. understands that the Government could now wait until after the Easter recess before bringing it back before the Commons.

During the vote, an MP was claimed to have “sworn” at staff. Labour MP Clive Lewis later apologised, stating that he had an “outburst in general at no-one specifically” after receiving a message. The result of the vote comes as Rishi Sunak is facing a crucial week with tests over the economy amid Tory discontent over his leadership.has urged mutinous Tory MPs to “stick to the plan” as reports emerge of a plot to oust him before the election. The Prime Minister is seeking to shift the political debate to the gradually improving economic outlook in an attempt to shore up his premiership.
