When challenged on his vague answer by one of his own constituents, the MP ended the conversation.

A Tory MP has said there was ‘no particular reason’ why he didn’t vote on an amendment to uphold British farming standards afterThe amendment to the Agriculture Bill, which would have required all food and drink entering the UK to meet or be better than British standards, was defeated on May 18. A farmer then contacted Brigg and Goole MP Andrew Percy to ask why he didn’t participate in the vote.

Percy then wrote back to say the amendment being ‘one of the most mportant issues’ for his farming constituents was a matter of opinion, not a statement of fact’. The conversation was then shared in community farming group online. This week the amendment to the Agriculture Bill was defeated by by 328 votes to 277, creating a majority of 51.
