Olympic venues and podiums should be off-limits for any form of protest, most Australian athletes believe

. But Australia’s Olympians want opportunities to express themselves in other forums, possibly at the athletes’ village, media conferences or via social media.

Well I’m sorry Australia but human beings right to not wanted to be murdered, being purposely damaged by doctors, being forced in substandard living, being paid less (enforcing poverty), or publicly attacked in the streets is ToO PoLiTcAl FoR ThE OlYmPiCs

They prefer no protesting to keep Aboriginals quiet.

Because most Australian athletes are white and they have nothing to protest against. But ask any aborigene athlete (if you're lucky to meet one), or any aborigene person you see in Alice Spring.

Behind the Fosters and sexism Australians are quite conservative chaps.

Se sofremos preconceito qualquer lugar é lugar de protesto

Yet the west uses the games to boycott, sanction and protest

The English are always extolling these actions and calls for equality......far away. But at home they treat minorities, refugees and immigrants like shit.

That picture is very misleading. While Peter Norman didn’t salute, he protested by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) badge in solidarity. He, Smith and Carlos became lifelong friends, so much so both Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at Normand funeral in 2006.

Most Australians are right-wing racists. Why would Australian athletes be any different?

The thing about protest is...it doesn’t work if you’ve got permission to do it.

would it be a “protest” if it were in an “appropriate place”?

Agreed. I don't want to see it, I don't support it. They can protest in their own time if they want.

And they’d be right.

Most Australians use a lot of common sense ... Wish more people would!

If you look up virtue signaling moron on google the Guardian readers pop up. 😂

Maybe because they are proud of the country they represent and aren't soy boy drinking they thems.

Good!

It is surely the best place.

Lol, what do Australians have to protest about

Would that be the almost entirely white set of athletes who rarely make it on to podiums?

Thankfully Peter Norman didn’t take such a pathetic approach.

Correction : Most *White Australian athletes

Apparently, it’s never the place or time for (blank)

I may be wrong, but isnt the whole idea to do it in a place that isn't appropriate for maximum impact?

Most Australian athletes are privileged and nothing to protest about then. Wonder if any athletes of original 'australian' background thinks any different.

I wonder if 'most Australian athletes' just don't want to share the podium with anything that might dilute their moment of glory?

If as the deeply unpleasant LewisHamilton does you try to force others to protest with you, you are being an intimidating bully and the protest lacks authenticity as a result

The next Olympics is going to be so woke and full of protest there won't be time for sport unless the organisers are brave enough to say no. 🥴 I for one won't be watching

Unfortunately for the Woke. Everywhere, everything can be a place or cause for protest.

Buzzkillers

Booooring!

Yeh. But. To adapt Yogi Berra to the case at hand, 'if the people don't want to come to the ballpark, you can't stop 'em.'

Certainly 👍👏👏👏👏👏

Every place is appropriate for a protest, that's the point of protesting.

Protest is pointless if it is not amplified. The Olympic podium provides an important amplifier. Protests are not meant to be convenient.

Was the survey confidential?

Australians ought to repent for how Peter Norman was treated.

Than they should just not protest.

Oh who CARES?!?

White Privilege

Yeah maybe if their ancestors who were dumped there from Britain were treated the way the Africans who were forced to the USA without their own inputs, they too will see the podium exactly how the Black Americans sees it. If they r so vexed, they can walk away from their medals

If not there, then where?

Most Australian athletes are also not the current Oz 200m record holder.

No wonder they do!

Please tell US athletes. Thanks.

What is their ethnicity? Smacks of white privilege to me.

doubt any of those privileged pricks will be getting metals

If you are told when and where and how you can stage a protest, it's no longer effective. They're designed to shock the public and force the government to change, restrictions defeat that

I walked past the statue of these SJSU alums, in this exact pose, on campus almost everyday for 5 years. It was a point of pride for me to go to the same school. The podium was the perfect place. It made waves and brought attention and you’re still talking about them, aren’t you?

There are times when 'not protesting' reflects very poorly on athletes....

Most Australian athletes have heads on their shoulders.

As long as they're consistent - either protests are allowed or they aren't, not 'certain ones are fine' - either decision works.

There’s no “appropriate” place for a protest, every single act and place can be turned into a protest.

They would not say that if they lived in Brazil and were poor athletes, black and from slums or from the peripheries of large cities.

then win and don't protest

But most Australians, not just their athletes, are taught from birth not to rock the boat. These days it's a very obedient society under the thumb of authoritarian government.

In America we know from experience the war on drugs causes more drugs. The war on racism causes more racism! It's common sense.

Because they have normal leaders
