Health Secretary, Victoria Atkins, said the British government hopes to have Rwanda flights taking off 'within weeks'.

More than 500 migrants crossed the Channel in small boats yesterday on the busiest day of arrivals so far this year, as politicians prepare for the latest fight to get deportation flights to Rwanda off the ground.

Asked whether the timeline could slip in to the summer, the Prime Minister's official spokesman told reporters on Monday: 'Our commitment remains to get flights off as soon as possible, and that has not changed. 'Clearly this week the PM is focused on ensuring that the Bill progresses through Parliament as quickly as possible.

But the Lords could decide to push their changes again, starting what is known as 'ping-pong' with the law passing between the Commons and the upper chamber repeatedly. Progress has reportedly stalled with all four countries, which were priorities in a long list of potential locations, as the Rwanda scheme struggles to get off the ground after two years of legal and political wrangling.
